I had always seen the word "bokeh" in photo editing apps and software since I was a kid and knew how to use mobile devices, but I never really knew what it meant. All I knew then was that they were simply photos that had blurry lighting and that they were cool. But today, I achieved it, which opened a new chapter.
Travel back in time with me, will you? And take today to be the 24th of December, 2022โChristmas Eve.
It may seem a little late to be setting up for Christmas, but I was just setting up the Christmas decor and placing the lights around on Christmas Eve evening. And just when I was done, I thought to myself, "You know, I should take photos of what I just did."
I began to experiment with different things: macro mode, portrait mode, long exposure (for the changing lights), and all that nerdy stuff on camera settings, just to find something pleasing to the eye, at least. You never know what you could get "accidentally" by trying out different things.
With a few clicks in all these modes, the outcome I received wasn't what I was expecting. Or maybe, if I were an experienced photographer, I would have probably expected the outcomes.
What I achieved is exactly what is referred to as "bokeh," and it is just as I had always known it to be. I found it cool and was fascinated by it, so much so that I went on to learn a little more about bokeh and just how I may have achieved it.
Bokeh simply refers to a state in which the lens would render an out-of-focus point of light. And when the light sources in the camera's view are out of focus, they may appear as circles (or other shapes) in the photos that are taken.
Apparently, there are actual conditions that could result in bokeh photos, and I just happened to meet some of them at that very moment to achieve this. For one, I was in a low-light environment, and the Christmas lights were the only source of light. And although I was looking for something else (capturing a bulb of the Christmas light as clearly as I could), the camera was adjusting itself to the lighting conditions it could sense. I only clicked when I thought I had what I needed.
I'm not sure when I'll try this style of photography again because I don't believe there are many opportunities for it, but I'll keep my eyes peeled for one.
