Greetings, everyone!
The system of grading or scoring students at school has helped the students to know their weaknesses and their strengths to buckle down and improve in their academic performance.
We all know that A is for excellent, B for very good, C for average, D for lower average, E for poor, and F for failure, and these letters come with their numerical equivalents that tell a lot to the student's mind seeing it pasted on the board.
Grades have been a school system or foundation for ages till now. Being a student in secondary school and writing an examination, and at the end of the day, the results are published, and every student would rally around to see their performance or receive a report card at the end of the term.
In my secondary school, I understood something about grades. I remembered in my SSS 1, all of us were in the general class receiving lectures.
In SSS 2, classes would be divided into art classes and science classes. For a student to know where to go was a result of seeing their grades. Some were scoring so high on chemistry, biology, and physics, and some were scoring high in mathematics, economics, and marketing. This helped us during our time to know if we should go into the science class or the art class. And the teachers were very good at teaching, and their gradings were not manipulative, they gave it to you according to how you understood and put it down.
However, SSS 2 and SSS 3 were like a preparatory level, depending on our scores, to know our strengths in particular subjects and what to study in the university.
Some students realized that they were good at science subjects, and some ventured into medicine and surgery, engineering, and lots related to science. Some who were good at art ventured into education, law, business administration, and many related fields. This was a good foundation laid for us through seeing our grades with numerical equivalents.
Moreover, in the university, there is what we call GPA, which means Grade Point Average, which is the performance for one semester or session, and CGPA, which means Cumulative Grade Point Average, which is the combined performance of all the semesters and sessions. This tells more of our effort and strength. If you weren't in studios, it will show in your GPA, which will go lower, and if you were in studios, yours will go higher.
There was a time in my second semester when I blatantly refused to read a particular course and during exams, I didn't write anything, when the results came out it was F9, I cried and I told myself this will be the last time, I'm experiencing this bloody grade because it lowers my GPA and I wasn't really happy about it.
Therefore, grades help to identify and highlight the strengths of students. This has been the culture of the educational system in Nigeria.
I remember those times when we heard our results were out, our hearts would be panting like a deer panting after the water. So it was a beautiful moment going through the lecturing, relationships, grading, and other aspects of school.
