It's really sad how quick some of us are to forget about how great our life is going, compared to some other people in other places. I mean, it's not a bad thing to want more or a better life, but rather than complaining all the time, it really wouldn't hurt to be appreciative of the things we have right now at this very moment.
And I will admit, sometimes it's not like we're being appreciative or we don't want to be; we just get carried away by life challenges that we forget about how far we've come until we get reminded through someone else's struggle.
A few days ago, some time past 12am in the midnight, I was struggling to get some sleep, so I picked up my phone and decided to browse through the internet, and that was when I stumbled upon the story of this young man who was doing quite okay here in Nigeria but, like everyone else, wanted more for himself.
So he decided to travel to Europe to make something out of his life; the only problem with that was that you needed a huge load of money to travel, money he didn't have at the time, so he decided to do something dumb: to travel illegally by road.
A journey that was supposed to take a couple of hours by air ended up taking about two years, and somewhere along the line, he had lost two of his brothers that traveled with it. And to make the matter even worse, he didn't get to Europe; he had to come back to Nigeria to start afresh.
Listening to his story and the torture he had to go through in Libya made me realize that although things might not be rosy over here, I'm living a wonderful life compared to those people over there. It made me realize how lucky I am to have the things I have, my family and friends and every little thing that I never saw as important; it made me very appreciative of the life I'm living.
