It was exactly 8 months ago the Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU) went on strike. The year 2022 strike started on the 14th of February and was called off on the 14th of October, 2022. What a coincidence!
I was still writing my final exams when the strike started and I thought it would affect us too. I was praying they allow us to finish the exams before my school would join them and by God's grace, we finished the exam and the strike started which made all students leave the school for their respective homes, waiting to see if it would be called off soon.
Though my school joined for some weeks later but called it off since it was a college of education. This definitely saved me and other students.
The strike was called off on Friday, the 14th of this month and it was both good and bad news for many students. Yes, some of us were so happy for the news, especially someone like me who is waiting for her school's graduation and Senate list to be posted for service.
One thing I am also grateful for was that I didn't apply to the main campus (OAU) as I wouldn't have graduated when I did but would be waiting for the strike to be called off. Maybe I will be resuming on Monday too to begin the final exam. Seriously, I wouldn't blame those who aren't ready to go back to school as they already started something beneficial to their lives.
I was on Twitter some days ago, including last night and I was just smiling seeing different cruises from our Nigerian students who aren't ready to go back to school. ASUU tweeted a question about the skills the students were able to learn while being at home for such long months and if they are happily resuming back.
Of course, there were many funny answers and majority of them were sad because they are just starting a new career or job and forgetting about school. A friend even posted that he is only going back to school because of his crews/friends and not because he wants to learn.
Many people would be caught unexpectedly with the strike being called off because they haven't worked so hard to save up for school or they just decided to find something to do while still hoping the strike would continue.
Enough of all these but I need to ask if you are happy or not with the strike being called off?
Even if you aren't, you don't have a choice but to dust your hidden books and prepare to resume as many schools are resuming tomorrow with immediate effect on lectures and exams. You don't have any other option unless you have decided to forget about school and do other things.
Thank God I am a graduate already and it's not easy going back to school when you have even forgotten the last topic before embarking on the strike. Many students have been working online to make ends meet while others have decided to waste such months doing nothing.
Well, it is not too late if you are ready to apply these tips if you want to work and study at the same time.
These tips worked for me while in school and it wasn't that stressful for me.
Making a decision: This is the first tip to make it work for you as a student. The first action for an individual is to decide what you want to do. If you want to study and at the same time, engage in work to help yourself, you have to decide because, without a decision, an action cannot be executed. So, decide now on what to do and where to go. If you still want to be a student while depending on the allowances from your parents, it's still a decision.
Proper time management: I bet you, without this skill, you will just find yourself moving in a circle with no plan at all. There is a need to manage your time by looking through your school's timetable and scheduling time for both. You can't do both at the same time and this is where you need to know how to manage your time so one will not distract the other.
Be focused: If you aren't focused, you cannot achieve a tangible result. When you are focused and know what you are doing with both, you will make the best result. Know when to study and when to engage with whatever you are doing. Have a defined plan with both and see how well you are doing with no stress in it.
Believe me, when you put these into practice, resuming back to school won't be a problem for you because you already know what you are aiming at and achieving from both. There is a need to balance both up so one will not be a distraction to the other because if this happened, you will end up losing it all and being frustrated along the line.
These are some of the tips I applied which made it easier as both didn't affect each other but turned out to help and work for me all through my stay in the University.
