When we keep doing things the same way over and over, boredom sets in. When the activity we do no longer excites us anymore or connects with our interests, we tend to get bored, and hope to find new ways to make things happen.
Boredom is normal for everyone. It’s a human feeling we all experience at some point. Boredom is the feeling you get when your mind craves stimulation; you feel like doing something, but whatever you do isn’t giving you enough, and then you switch off completely.
For some, they take a stroll with the hope that the interest and motivation will spike back in later. And for others, they either take a shower or scroll endlessly on social media. Then, there are the categories of those who switch to overthinking.
I used to be in the last category before, and I could tell you that being bored can be dangerous if we don’t control our minds at that moment. Boredom can make us do the unthinkable — things you’d be surprised to find yourself doing - things you would never have done on a normal day.
It’s always good to have a goal with different strategies, so we don’t end up doing things the same way every time. The body is wired to do things differently, so that new ways can motivate and interest us and help us have fun while doing something new.
In the past, I used to overthink a lot when I was bored, and at other times, I just lay there imagining different weird things. I would find myself unconsciously snapping my fingers and saying “God forbid,” because of the dirty thoughts I was having.
Boredom can make one so lazy that you might be sent to do things you shouldn’t be doing just because someone else wants you to have a feel of something different, but not ideal. Whenever I realise I have gone too far in my thoughts, I immediately find things to do by all means just so the thoughts won't cross my mind again.
But for a while now, I have been doing things differently. Whenever I am bored, instead of just sitting there doing nothing and letting my mind wander, I sit or lie down in bed and turn on my YouTube Music to play songs in the background. While I sit or lie down, moving my head left and right, suddenly, I would jump up to start dancing.
This has really helped me overcome boredom and prevent me from becoming unproductive for the day. It is when I am dancing that new ideas start popping in my head, and before I know it, I have something new to work on, and that is how it has been till now.
This is why I suggest everyone should not have much free time, like not having anything to do for certain hours or days, and no structure for one’s time. Another thing about boredom is that when our minds are tired and can’t engage with things again, it hits. This is why we must always relax when needed rather than wait until the body demands it forcefully.
This made me remember a guy who narrated how boredom made him host a giveaway on WhatsApp nights ago, only to realise he couldn’t pay the winners their prizes. He blamed boredom for keeping him awake past his bedtime. Instead, he was moved to run a giveaway that he later regretted. Lol
So, we need to be careful about what we do when we're bored, and yes, there are cool and nice things we do because we are bored, like going out to meet up with friends, where we would end up having fun, and then we feel excited about it.
Others take a stroll around the area to feast their eyes on the lovely beautification. In all, being able to control our minds when boredom hits is important so we aren’t regretting our actions later.
