Hello friends, in this time of Christmas festivities and approach to the new year 2026, let's reflect on this thought-provoking theme.
We often complain about the bad things that happen in our country, we talk about injustices, lack of support, wrong decisions, and problems that seem never to disappear. But there are times when these complaints weigh even more heavily, especially when we realize that some truly serious situations happened because the government itself supported them or allowed them to happen, and this is part of history and nothing can erase it.
In the case of Portugal, which is my country, a clear example of this was the Colonial War. For many years, the Portuguese government decided to maintain the war in Africa, even when it was already obvious that it was causing suffering to everyone involved. Young Portuguese men were sent far from their homes, often against their will, to fight in a war they didn't understand well and didn't feel was their own. At the same time, the local populations of these countries lived in constant fear, violence, and loss, and this is, in my opinion, a very negative landmark in the history of my country.
Reflecting on this topic, the hardest thing to accept is that it didn't happen by chance; it was a choice. The government of the time chose to continue the war to maintain its colonies, to avoid losing power, and to avoid admitting that the world was changing. Even when other countries had already taken a different path, Portugal insisted on a long, expensive, and painful war, both in terms of human lives and emotional consequences that will forever remain etched in the memories of many families.
One thing I know for sure is that many Portuguese families were forever scarred. Some people never returned, others returned changed, with traumas that no one spoke of. For a long time, all of this was treated as normal, almost as a patriotic duty. But today, looking back, it's difficult not to see the cruel side of this decision, which still haunts us.
This says a lot about the leaders who were in power at that time. It shows that when someone wants to maintain control at all costs, they can end up ignoring the suffering of ordinary people. It also shows how power can distance those who govern from the reality of those who live with the consequences of their decisions. For these leaders, war was a strategy for those who were there; it was fear, pain, and loss, which still lingers in the stories of people from that time.
But this story isn't just about the leaders; it's also about the people who benefited from the situation. There were those who made money from the war, those who rose in life by supporting the regime, and those who preferred to remain silent to avoid problems. Not all were bad, but many chose the comfort of silence instead of questioning what was happening, and we can still see this in so many wars around the world today.
At the same time, it's also true that many people had no choice; living under a dictatorship meant being afraid to speak, afraid to disagree. Even so, this doesn't erase the fact that the system existed because there were people supporting it, in one way or another.
When I talk about this today, it's not to attack Portugal, but on the contrary, to acknowledge that our country also made serious mistakes and that these mistakes had real consequences for many people. Ignoring the past doesn't make us better; it helps us learn from it so that, as people, we don't repeat the same mistakes.
This example shows that human beings are capable of justifying almost anything when they think they are gaining something from it. It shows how easy it is to close our eyes to the suffering of others when we are not paying the price. And it shows how important it is to question those who govern, even when they say they are acting "for the good of the country," and many times this is just smoke and mirrors for people who don't want to or can't see beyond that.
In the end, I think the great lesson is this: when we stop questioning, when we accept everything as normal, we open space for wrong things to continue happening. It is up to us to remember, speak out, and reflect so that such inhumane decisions are never repeated in the name of power or pride. It's worth reflecting on this.

Olá amigos nesta época de festejos natalícios e de aproximação ao ano novo 2026 vamos refletir sobre este tema que nos faz pensar.
Muitas vezes queixamo-nos das coisas más que acontecem no nosso país falamos de injustiças, de falta de apoio, de decisões erradas e de problemas que parecem nunca desaparecer. Mas há momentos em que essas queixas pesam ainda mais, sobretudo quando percebemos que algumas situações realmente graves aconteceram porque o próprio governo as apoiou ou deixou acontecer e isso faz parte da história e nada poderá apagar a mesma.
No caso de Portugal que é o meu país, um exemplo claro disso foi a Guerra Colonial. Durante muitos anos, o governo português decidiu manter a guerra em África, mesmo quando já era óbvio que aquilo estava a causar sofrimento a toda a gente envolvida, jovens portugueses eram enviados para longe das suas casas, muitas vezes contra a vontade, para lutar numa guerra que não entendiam bem e que não sentiam como sua. Ao mesmo tempo, as populações locais desses países viviam em constante medo, violência e perda e isso é um marco na minha opinião muito negativo na história do meu país.
Ao refletir sobre este tema o mais difícil de aceitar é que isto não aconteceu por acaso foi uma escolha porque o governo da altura escolheu continuar a guerra para manter as colónias, para não perder poder e para não admitir que o mundo estava a mudar. Mesmo quando outros países já tinham seguido outro caminho, Portugal insistiu numa guerra longa, cara e dolorosa, tanto em vidas humanas como em consequências emocionais, que ficarão sempre registadas em memórias de muitas familias.
Uma certeza tenho muitas famílias portuguesas ficaram marcadas para sempre, houve pessoas que nunca regressaram, outras que voltaram diferentes, com traumas que ninguém falava. Durante muito tempo, tudo isto foi tratado como algo normal, quase como um dever patriótico. Mas hoje, olhando para trás, é difícil não ver o lado cruel dessa decisão e que ainda nos assombra.
Isto diz muito sobre os líderes que estavam no poder naquela época. Mostra que, quando alguém quer manter controlo a todo o custo, pode acabar por ignorar o sofrimento das pessoas comuns. Mostra também como o poder pode afastar quem governa da realidade de quem vive as consequências das suas decisões. Para esses líderes, a guerra era uma estratégia para quem lá esteve, era medo, dor e perda, que ainda hoje perdura nas histórias das pessoas daquele tempo.
Mas esta história não fala só dos líderes fala também das pessoas que beneficiaram com a situação houve quem ganhasse dinheiro com a guerra, quem subisse na vida por apoiar o regime, quem preferisse ficar calado para não ter problemas. Nem todos eram maus, mas muitos escolheram o conforto do silêncio em vez de questionar o que estava a acontecer, e isso ainda hoje em dia conseguimos ver em tantas guerras por este mundo fora.
Ao mesmo tempo, também é verdade que muita gente não tinha escolha viver numa ditadura significava ter medo de falar, medo de discordar. Ainda assim, isso não apaga o facto de que o sistema existiu porque houve pessoas a sustentá-lo, de uma forma ou de outra.
Eu quando falo sobre isto hoje não é atacar Portugal mas sim pelo contrário é reconhecer que o nosso país também cometeu erros graves e que esses erros tiveram consequências reais para muitas pessoas. Ignorar o passado não nos torna melhores aprender com ele, sim, para que como pessoas não voltemos a cometer os mesmo os erros.
Este exemplo mostra que os seres humanos são capazes de justificar quase tudo quando acham que estão a ganhar alguma coisa com isso. Mostra como é fácil fechar os olhos ao sofrimento dos outros quando não somos nós a pagar o preço. E mostra como é importante questionar quem governa, mesmo quando dizem que estão a agir “pelo bem do país” e muitas das vezes isso é só areia para os olhos das pessoas que não querem ou não podem ver mais além.
No fim, acho que a grande lição é esta, quando deixamos de questionar, quando aceitamos tudo como normal, abrimos espaço para que coisas erradas continuem a acontecer. Cabe a nós lembrar, falar e refletir, para que decisões tão desumanas nunca mais sejam repetidas em nome de poder ou orgulho.Vale a pena refletir sobre isto.
