Adoption is not a topic that i am very familiar with, i have only heard much of adoption in movie but dont know much about adoption first hand. In my country adoption mostly do not through any legal process like the way it takes place in developed countries where they go through rigorous legal processes.
Here in my country adoption sometimes does not under the processes like the developed countries where there is an application and selection process before one is being deemed fit for adoption. Here, one can just give out their children to another person without passing through the processes of adoption.
There is a common saying that says it takes a village to raise a child, people in Nigeria usually finds it a norm to send their children to friends, families or even strangers to raise and send to school because they are incapable to sponsor them or they want a better life and education for their children.
What i have come to understand about the rigorous process from the movies i have watched is that the government wants to make sure that the children are protected from people with history of abuse, financial instability and an unsafe environment. A lot of people have history of abusive behaviour to children, they tend to treat children very bad which could make them turn out traumatised. A house that is financially unstable may not be fit for any child to live or grow in, children have financial needs and staying in a home where money is a problem could affect the growth and development of the child, the system does not look at the amount of wealth of the applicant but they check if their is a bedspace for the child for instance and if the income is stable enough to provide food and other supplies for the child. It is also important that the home is safe for the child to stay, a house is that is not healthy for a child may not be a safe place for the child's health, the community workers or child services come to house to inspect all these before the individual is deemed fit for adoption.
The mode of adoption in the 3rd world countries like Nigeria rely majorly on commonality and honor, the heavy disadvantage however is the lack of paper trail that sometimes results to child labour, room for exploitation, and cases of unmonitored and unrecorded child mistreatment.
The difference between the legal system is that In a legal system If an adoptive parent begins abusing a child, teachers, doctors, and social workers are legally mandated to report it, and the state can step in because the child is "in the system. While In the informal system, Because the child was simply "given out," there is no regulatory body checking If a child is mistreated, overworked, or denied the education they were promised, they often have no one to turn to.
