Greetings!
First aid is one of the topics we were taught when in both our primary and secondary schools back in the days. Then, there's a first aid box in the headmaster and principal's office that has in it, plaster, cotton wool, iodine, spirit, razor blades and so on, so whenever we got injured on the field of play, we were always taking to the the general office for first aid treatment and this treatment had saved most of us from permanent defect till now.
But, back then, I didn't really understand the topic and the effect of this until recently when I attended a seminar on how to apply a first treatment on a victim that needed it.
At the seminar, we were told how to treat a victim that needed a first aid treatment before we could rush them to the hospital for full and proper treatment.
It's at the seminar that I got to know that the kind of first aid treatment we were brought up with is not as advanced as the one we now have here and this is because at the seminar, we were taught the CPR which means Cardiopulmonary resuscitation which is an emergency treatment that's done when someone's breathing or heartbeat has stopped.
So, at the seminar, we were taught how to carry out CPR on someone that's not breathing very well or whose heartbeat had stopped. Also at the seminar we practiced what we are taught and it's an interesting one.
It's after the seminar that I evaluated what we've been taught at the seminar and concluded that the level of first aid treatment we currently have has really improved to what we used to have in the past years which is only limited to treating wounds and the likes.
So, after the seminar, we went back to our places of primary assignments which are our schools, and related all we learnt at the seminar to all other members of staff which all of them showed interest in.
So, later in the term, an incident happened to one of our students who just stopped breathing while playing with his colleagues on the school field and this threw all the school community into uproar and it's when everyone had scattered that i was being called on to come and practice what we learnt at the seminar.
Although, I was at first afraid of what would be the outcome of the treatment on the young boy, but as I started,I gained the confidence as I continually pressed the chest of the victim and eventually for me and the boy, he came back to life and everywhere went agog at the resurrection of the boy.
After the resurrection of the boy through the CPR, he was taken to the hospital where full and proper treatment was carried out on him, but to be sincere, the CPR I carried out on the boy as a first aid treatment really worked wonder not to me alone but to every other persons present at the scene and this made me a champion in the school community, but my own major take home was the opportunity to rescue a life from dying that I was able to use very well.
Less I forget, while carrying out the CPR on the young boy, I made sure we placed him in a well ventilated room where there's free air and this helped me in carrying out the treatment on him. Had it been the place was overcrowded by his mates, this would have been possible.
In conclusion, first aid treatment is a very good thing that everyone must have knowledge of and this is because of its intent of preventing lives from being lost. We were taught some many first aid measures at the seminar, but the CPR was the one I enjoyed most.
