Crimes are acts carried out against the law. I have heard of crime stories and even watched many crime movies but they were not as real as the one I experienced myself and boy, it was not pleasant at all.
This horrible act happened about two years ago when I and my roommate were preparing for our test that morning by 5am.
We were reading, I on my bed and she on hers. I plugged my big smartphone on the socket not too far away from the door while I was reading with my small smartphone.
I was backing the one I was charing as I was reading when like a flash of thunder someone snatched our door open. An average heighted dark skinned male with his face covered.
He pulled my phone from the charger very quickly in a way that almost destroyed the charger and run out of the room.
It was so fast that I thought I was dreaming. I quickly rushed put and shouted "thief thief!!" to attract the neighbours.
When few persons came out, we tried to trace the thief but he had already gone too far.
My neighbours advised me to go to the Vigilante: group of men that secure a street or community at night much like security guards, they can catch for criminals and take them to the police.
They directed my roommate and I to the house of their leader but we had to wait till the day dawned before going.
My roomate was so shocked and scared that she cried all through the incident while I, still surprised at what happened, made calls with my other phone to the Customer Care service of my bank to block my account so the thief would not be able to hack my account and do away with my funds because my ATM card was inside the phone's pouch and went with the phone.
This really got to me because the stolen phone was my main phone containing my main sim card which I was unable to retrieve after the incident. The other one was much smaller, the screen was cracked, the strorage capacity and android version were lower than the other one so I just used it to study my ebooks so I could save the battery of the other one.
About 2 hours later, my roommate and I went to the Vigilante to report what happened and after answering a series of questions, they intelligently brought some suspects to us who were of questionable character, the kind of guys who would like commit such a crime and told us if we could remember the physical features of the thief. We said we could if we saw him so he brought these suspects to us to see if any among them was the culprit but none of them was, though we were very suspicious of one particular guy.
They also advised me to trace the phone if I was still with the phone pack the phone came with.
This process was very long and was going to cost me a good amount of money so I decided to leave that part.
Meanwhile, the Vigilante was asking me for money to run their search for the thief. They asked for operation fee, movement fee and one other fee🙄
I was bewildered at how they could be asking for so much from me who just lost my phone to a thief who might be negotiating the price of the phone with a buyer...
Seeing I wasn't going anywhere with the Vigilante and couldn't trace the stolen phone or even retrieve my sim card or have access to my account, I left it because the money I needed to do these things was just enough to get a brand new one so why the stress?
The time cane for my test and I went to write it.
It wasn't easy for me at all using the small smartphone because it was really limited but since it was the only one available, I managed to use it till I got a better one.
Well, my roomate put a burglary protector at the door and changed the curtains to a darker one so no one could peep through it to peer through the house— that's how my phone was stolen.
I learnt to always be extra areful with my devices and decided it was the last time any of my device would be stolen and it has been so since then.
Till next time...
