Did the title pique your interest. Well it will all make sense once you finish reading this post. Today I will be sharing a true personal story about how I lost weight!
This story goes back to when I was 18 years old. At the time, I believe I was around 55KG. I don't remember exactly when but there was one day where I had an argument with my mom and stepdad. My parents were quite strict in my opinion; they expected me to sleep early and not be on the computer or games too long at night. Well I was already 18 and I guess I reached a point where I thought I should have more freedom and a short argument happened. The argument ended with "if you don't want to follow the rules, then move out" and I was like "Ok I will". I was a bit angry so it was something I said in the heat of the moment. I said I would move out by the beginning of the New Year if I recall correctly. Anyways I'm the type of the person that doesn't like to go back on what they say so believe it or not I actually did move out.
In the beginning, I actually didn't find a place to stay yet so I stayed at one of my friend's place. I stayed there for around two weeks until I found an affordable room to rent on craigslist. By affordable, I really mean affordable they only made me pay $300 USD a month which is considered to be super cheap where I lived. To put into context, to rent a room from where my parents lived would cost over $1000 per month. This room was rented out to me by a young married couple who happened to be gamers so we got a long quite well and it was totally chill. Well as they say you get what you pay for. The neighborhood from this place I rented wasn't a super nice area; there was a casino across the street. This place I would consider it as a ghetto area and for those that don't know it means a poor urban area by minority groups. I actually didn't have much money saved and moving out wasn't planned so I had to live in this cheap area and it really opened my eyes.
During this period, I had to support myself so I had a job at a grocery store. Most of the money I earned was to cover rent, gas and food. To be honest, the first few months were tough and I was basically skipping meals sometimes. There were some days I didn't eat at all. There wasn't really choice though because I didn't have the money. I had to work with the money I had so most of the times I just had instant noodles, bread & peanut butter just to get by. I would buy stuff from the dollar menu from Mcdonald's. This was all just for survival.
Things got better over the years as I was able to save more and earn more so things got better but the damage was already done. Over the course of that time, I lost around 10 KG. So what did I learn from this whole ordeal. Well one you need to plan if you want to move out and definitely have money saved. Besides that, I learned a lot from moving out about taking care of my budget and responsibility etc. I also realized how sheltered I was and it really woke me up to what the adulting world was like.
(A photo I took today after weighing myself so this quite up to date :D)
Anyways I came back to Malaysia when I was 21 years old to continue my studies so I stayed with my dad and I was also nearer to my grandparents. Let's just say they thought I was skinny and fed me so I was able to gain back almost all that weight I lost. I'm turning 27 this year and now I'm about 56.4 KG which is still towards the low end but I'm still considered normal weight when I checked my BMI.
Coming back to my title, the topic was about weight gain and weight loss. I know it's not grammatically correct to say what was once loss. It was all intentional to fit the theme of this topic because I did really once lost weight and well now I have gained it all back~
Thank you so much for reading until the end. I hope you enjoyed my story. Until next time~
