The new year celebration is one I don't really want to miss with my family, wherever I am I'll make sure I travel down home to enjoy every bit of it.
Most of the new year festivals have been observing ever since my conception it has always been in the city where I grew up but there was a particular year about 12 years ago now, I was still much younger then but I can recollect all that happened. We all had to travel down to our hometown, my dad made it compulsory though, he just built a new house in our village then and was also celebrating his chieftaincy title, so he wanted us all to go celebrate together. At first my siblings were against the idea that we all should go but I did all I could to convince them and with Dad compulsion, we had no choice than to follow him lol... and thank God everything turn out well.
There are so many reasons why my siblings don't want to visit our village; one is because my village is still very local, hardly will you get a network to call talkless of browsing, my dad usually visits so he gave us report on the situation of things that if you want to call without any challenges you have to climb a mountain to get a network hmm strange 🙈😃😃 The reason is because my village is surrounded with hills so that makes it hard for one to get a good network. Though it's now a different story everything has changed for good.
Also how to get some basic provisions is also a problem, atimes you'll have to travel to the nearest town that is more civilized/developed.
Another reason is because my village is widely known for witchcraft, yeah witchcraft 😏😏 We do hear rumor that even all the neighboring villages do fear my village and most times when I tell people where I come from, if it's someone that knows my place, the person would greet me speciall lol... it's so funny anyway. Even me despite being the one that's encouraging my siblings to travel, when I think about this, my heart skips 😃😃 but then I believe in God that nothing evil will befall me and my family.
With all this we still managed to travel, but we had to gather all what we need like foodstuffs and other things and even sachet water to avoid stories that touch.
The chieftaincy title was slated to hold on 31st of December, so we decided to celebrate the new year there and stay some days before returning back home. People came from all over, within and outside the state. My dad was working in Abuja so virtually all citizens in his place of work was present. There was a very large turn out, I don't think there has been so much population in my village for awhile.
The main event is on 31st, we traveled to the village on 29th, and since we got to the village, people has started coming to pay us visit. Everywhere was lively, bubbling and merriment here and there, it's still season of festivities so everywhere was full of live. The very day that the celebration came and it was just superb, I saw masquerade live for the first time, I onlys ee them on television beofre.
One of the things I enjoyed most was the people I met, I don't use to visit my home town that often so there was a lot of introduction, my dad was introducing us to other relatives/friends and vice versa. I don't know we have so many beautiful people like that in my hometown anyways. Everywhere was vibes on vibes, it was as if the merriment shouldn't stop.
We also got to visit the palace and we had time to chat with the king, queens, the two prince and princess. It was a very good time in the palace, we also wine and dine.
Lastly I made mention that my village is surrounded with a lot of hills but there was a particular one that has a historical background, it was the hill that our forefathers use to hide when there was war, it was the hideout that saved our people then according to the history I heard. The mountain is a very tall one but we managed to climb to the very top. Though my elder brother had to back my younger sister because she's still small and don't have enough strength to climb. On getting to the top we had already carry a music player along and some snacks and drinks to have some fun. Trust me, it was a very happy time.
We also had a small party when we got home later in the day. I really enjoyed the kind of celebration we had that year.
Ever since then we've not been able to travel in mass to our village, that particular one I can never forget.
