WHAT IS AN ABORTION
Abortion is a method of terminating a pregnancy.
It's also referred to as a pregnancy termination.
Pregnancy is terminated by the use of medications or a surgical procedure.
WHEN IS IT LEGAL TO GET AN ABORTION?
In England, Wales, and Scotland, the majority of abortions are performed before the woman reaches the 24-week mark of her pregnancy.
They can be performed after 24 weeks in extremely specific situations, such as if the mother's life is in danger or if the kid would be delivered with a serious handicap.
Most abortion clinics will request an ultrasound scan to determine how far along you are in your pregnancy. The beginning day of your last menstruation is used to determine the duration of your pregnancy.
The earlier an abortion is performed, the safer it is. If you seek counsel early on, you will have more time to make a decision if you are undecided.
MAKING THE CHOICE TO GET AN ABORTION IS A BIG STEP
Only you have the power to decide whether or not to get an abortion.
Some women may be adamant about their desire for an abortion, while others may find it difficult to make a decision.
If a woman wishes to have an abortion, she can discuss her choices with a licensed pregnancy counsellor and get help.
If you don't want to, you don't have to talk to your partner, friends, or family. They have no bearing on your choice.
If you do not want your information shared, it will be kept private.
Your information will be kept private if you do not wish to tell anyone.
DURING AN ABORTION, WHAT HAPPENS?
You will have an appointment before having an abortion to discuss your decision and what will happen next.
You should be offered a choice about how the abortion will be carried out whenever feasible.
There are two choices:
Medical abortion (abortion pill) — you take two drugs to induce an abortion, generally 24 to 48 hours apart.
Surgical abortion — you have a procedure to remove the pregnancy and are usually able to return home shortly after.
After an abortion, you'll most likely need to relax for a few days. For up to two weeks, you're likely to have some pain and vaginal bleeding.
ABORTION'S DANGERS
Abortion is a completely risk-free surgery. When abortions are performed as early in pregnancy as feasible, they are the safest and result in the least amount of pain and bleeding.
The majority of women will have no issues, however there is a tiny possibility of difficulties, such as:
The womb is infected (uterus)
Some of the pregnancy remains in the womb due to heavy bleeding, womb injury, or womb entry (cervix)
If issues arise, you may require further treatment, which may include surgery.
You will not be harmed if you get an abortion since you will be able to conceive again and have normal pregnancies in the future.
After an abortion, you might be able to get pregnant right away. If you don't want to get pregnant, you should take contraception.
FOLLOWING AN ABORTION
After a surgical abortion or a medicinal abortion in a hospital, you normally don't require any more tests or checkups.
If you undergo a medical abortion at home, you may require a particular pregnancy test or scan to confirm that the pregnancy is over.
You may experience short-term adverse effects from the drugs if you undergo a medical abortion, such as diarrhoea and feeling ill.
The general anaesthesia and sedative drugs used during a surgical abortion might have negative effects.
