Crime rate in a particular geographical area depends on the level of living standard of the people living within that particular area. The lower the living standard of the people, the greater the crime scene within the area and vice versa. So the question is, where do I find myself? It is quite unfortunate that the living standard of the people within my city is not as good as we wish it could be.
Accra is not safe during the broad day light to talk of night. A person can just be attacked from behind depending on the areas you are navigating through. There are some areas you do not pass at certain times of the day on the street of Accra. There are hungry gang members who will take advantage of you if care is not taken. They can just grab you from behind or pull a small knife on you and you will be forced to give up your belongings.

Not all parts of Accra that have these acts but it depends on the particular areas you find yourself during the day. Ashaiman like this, Nima, Tema New Town, Accra New Town, Circle etc. are all some areas extra caution must be taken to avoid being victimized by street hungry birds, vultures and lions.
The city looks very beautiful at night but what goes on during this time of the day will surprise you. As much as there are areas not advisable to pass during the day time, same way it's not advisable to pass during the night day. These are areas prone to thefts and criminal acts.
There are certain times of the night not advisable to be out alone. There are some areas that you can move freely but to a certain extent. Even within the residential areas, there are robbery cases recorded on regular bases. There is one family that abandoned their mansion to come live within our estate because of the disturbances of armed-robbers. These are well demarcated areas with rich people living there yet least mistake and your life or property is in danger.
You can only be safe when you increase the level of personal security. You need to get an electric fence with alarms, get bulldogs and probably arm yourself with any weapon that can be of self defense. I remember when we got into our new home. It is actually a new site and not all that developed but it is growing into an estate. This place can be located on a hill top. All the land around there is owned by a company hence must people within the area are company workers.
I remember once I got back from work and to my surprise, there were company workers and some other people from the area in our home. To my surprise, armed robbers had attacked my neighbor and stolen his car. He did not go to work on that very day. I can only imagine the trauma this poor man and his family might be going through at that moment. From the man, the robbers were well armed. They were six in number, with huge guns and masks on. The incident happened during the night and I was at the night shift so I was not a witness but upon hearing what transpired, I was very frightened.
Nobody advised us to put up a fence. In just a week, our building was fenced with an electric fence. As I am speaking, we have 3 watch dogs. Two german shepherds and a bulldog. Security is very tight now. We do not want to be taken by surprise once again. We are very vigilant now. There is a saying that goes "once beaten, twice shy". In this part of the world, the best way to stay safe is extra carefulness. Crime rate is moderate as compared to other places but the least mistake and you will be caught off guard in a very unpleasant attack from an unknown enemy.

This is not how it used to be but things have changed totally due to certain life circumstances and personal interest. The increase in crime is as result low living standard as a result of bad management from the country leaders. If the economy was managed very well, there wouldn't have been any desire of youths to indulge in criminal acts so they can survive. Very little job availability forcing people to engage in criminal acts.
Not all crime scenes are of the indigenous citizens,
migration is also another factor that contributes to most criminal acts. This is because when foreigners from various part of the world comes in search of greener pastures and unfortunately don't get any result, they end up engaging in all sorts of criminal acts.
It's not that there are no security forces, there is but the most important part of protection is the individual himself. It is better to protect yourself because it might be too late by the time a police comes to the rescue.
This is where I draw the curtains on this interesting topic "the crime rate in my vicinity". Thank You
