Crazy world we live in, real crazy!
Life has become so hard these days that people are willing to survive by any means.
When I remember when me and my friends always make jokes about selling our organs, when my cousin would form a serious face and ask me “, how much kidney die for the market now? This my right kidney don due I wan change phone," and I would respond with “hmmm, you can sell it and buy iPhone XR if it even reaches,"
Today, for my hospital posting, we visited the blood bank and observed people coming and going for donations.
After the intern, they kept on charge of us, finished walking us through the blood bank department and how it functions, and asked if we had any questions for him. The first question that was raised seriously was “How much is a pint of blood?" The guy laughed and said he knew that question was inevitable because everyone is looking for money.
These things are funny, but when I think about how there are people out there desperate enough to sell their own organs to survive, it quickly becomes dark.
I have asked myself this question before, when I came across a post that said they sell organs only to look it up and discover it was fake and sales of organs in any way is illegal, The first thing I said was “but it’s my body, so I shouldn't I be able to decide what to do with it.
The logic of the right to our body when it comes to tattoos, surgery, and other things is totally different when it comes to organ sale.
People get tattoos because they want to, but if people were to sell their organs it would be only out of desperation. It would be a result of poverty, inequality, suffering, and sure exploitation would come in at some point.
I believe that's when another question comes in: What is free will? Can a decision made out of extreme poverty and oppression still be considered normal free will?
Now, when it comes to the consequences, it's the poor who would suffer because they would be the sellers.
And some might think it's okay because it is their choice but so many things can go wrong. Exploitation that would lead to health issues because they wouldn't be taken care of after, and coercion; some people might be forced or pressured into selling their organs, I am sure, for one, loan sharks wouldn't lack in that field.
When the poor are prevented from selling their organs, it might seem like the government is infringing on their rights, but the reality is that they are just stopping the poor from becoming organ factories.
To me, legal organ sales would create more problems than solving them, and it ain't just worth it.
So instead of asking “why are people not allowed to sell their organs?” We should be asking, “Should life become so bad that people would want to sell their organs?”
The main problem is the system failing to the extent that people are forced into the decision of selling their organs.
