Hace menos de un mes llego el verano en el Hemisferio Sur y comenzó con todo, en tan solo 4 semanas ya hemos tenido dos olas de calor y parece ser que este año decidió venir con mayor intensidad que en años anteriores, así que este post no será una dedicatoria de amor al calor y el verano, sino más bien una queja porque este búho endemoniado detesta las temperaturas extremas, tanto el frio como el calor, sufre mucho ambos, pero tolera más el frio, así que prepárense para esta travesía de pura mala racha.

Less than a month ago, summer arrived in the Southern Hemisphere and it started with a bang. In just four weeks, we've already had two heat waves, and it seems that this year it has decided to come with greater intensity than in previous years. So this post will not be a love letter to heat and summer, but rather a complaint because this devilish owl hates extreme temperatures, both cold and heat. It suffers greatly from both, but tolerates the cold better, so get ready for this journey of pure bad luck.

Comencemos por el principio. Lo que más nos gusta del verano, para no ser tan quejosa, es la piscina, darse un buen chapuzón en el agua es una de las actividades más placenteras cuando hace mucho calor y es infaltable, no puede haber verano sin un chapuzón en el agua. Buhito ha tenido desde siempre piscina, pero ya hace un par de años que no ha podido disfrutarla porque se rompió. Al parecer tenía una rajadura que hacía que se vaciara más de la mitad del agua y no podíamos estar llenándola todo el tiempo, eso era un desperdicio de agua, así que llamamos a alguien para que la reparara y en lugar de eso, termino por estropearla aún más. Esa pequeña porción de agua que antes no se escapaba, ahora desaparece en cuestión de horas dejándola completamente seca, como si nunca hubiese habido agua allí, así que la rajadura se hizo más grande al parecer.

Let's start at the beginning. What we like most about summer, so as not to be so complaining, is the pool. Taking a nice dip in the water is one of the most enjoyable activities when it's really hot, and it's a must—there can be no summer without a dip in the water. Buhito has always had a pool, but he hasn't been able to enjoy it for a couple of years because it broke. Apparently, it had a crack that caused more than half of the water to leak out, and we couldn't keep filling it up all the time. That was a waste of water, so we called someone to repair it, but instead, they ended up damaging it even more. That small amount of water that didn't leak out before now disappears in a matter of hours, leaving it completely dry, as if there had never been any water there, so the crack apparently got bigger.

Solíamos estar un par de horas allí tomando mate y escapando del calor, hubo muchos juegos, saltos al agua, demasiados recuerdos en aquella piscina que ahora es un acumulador de mugre. Nadie se preocupa por mantenerla limpia, así que quedo en el olvido, teniendo una bella piscina para soportar el calor y no poder usarla porque nadie supo cómo arreglarla y creo que ya no tiene solución.

We used to spend a couple of hours there drinking mate and escaping the heat. There were lots of games, jumps into the water, too many memories in that pool that is now a dumping ground for dirt. No one cares about keeping it clean, so it has been forgotten, a beautiful pool to beat the heat that cannot be used because no one knew how to fix it, and I think it is beyond repair.

Bueno, sin piscina, el aire acondicionado se volvió una segunda opción para no sufrir tanto el calor, pero como la mayoría piensa igual, hay muchos negocios y personas adineradas que hacen discriminación al uso inconsciente de este artefacto, afectando el servicio de electricidad de muchos vecinos y por ende el de Buhito también. Este aire acondicionado lo tenemos hace muchísimos años y lo que parecía ser un alivio para Buhito, no lo es, porque con tanta bajada de tensión, el aire sale más caliente que frio, por ende también está de adorno, al igual que la piscina, no se puede usar.

Well, without a pool, air conditioning became a second option to avoid suffering so much from the heat, but since most people think the same way, there are many businesses and wealthy individuals who discriminate against the unconscious use of this appliance, affecting the electricity service of many neighbors and, therefore, Buhito's as well. We have had this air conditioning for many years, and what seemed to be a relief for Buhito is not, because with so many power outages, the air comes out hotter than cold, so it is also just for decoration, like the pool, it cannot be used.

Pasemos a la tercera opción. Un ventilador o turbo es una excelente forma de calmar el calor, antes del aire acondicionado, este era el artefacto de preferencia para no sufrir el calor y siempre me gustó más que el aire acondicionado, pero con lo intensos que vienen los veranos últimamente, ya no es una opción viable y se imaginaran que con la bajada de tensión, este ventilador apenas hace un suspiro y solo sirve si estas pegado a él, como Buhito que a pesar de su liviano peso, el viento que desprende es tan suave y lento que no puede ni tumbar a un mosquito que pase volando sobre él.

Let's move on to the third option. A fan or turbo fan is an excellent way to cool down. Before air conditioning, this was the preferred device for beating the heat, and I always liked it better than air conditioning. But with summers becoming so intense lately, it's no longer a viable option. And you can imagine that with the power outages, this fan barely makes a whisper and only works if you're right next to it, like Buhito, which despite its light weight, produces such a gentle and slow breeze that it can't even knock down a mosquito flying over it.

Como fracasamos con todas las opciones para soportar el calor, pasemos a aperitivos típicos del verano: el helado. Este es el postre de preferencia para el verano, es rico, refrescante y medianamente accesible, aquí vemos a Buhito queriendo probar algo de helado porque está muerto de calor y nada de lo que tiene en su casa le sirve para amortiguarlo, así que como última opción tuvo la gran idea de darse un atracón de helado. Como podrán ver, pienso que el helado no es una buena opción tampoco porque Buhito no tiene autocontrol y se bajó más de medio balde de helado él solo y en cuestión de minutos. ¡Así no hay helado que rinda!

Since we failed with all the options for coping with the heat, let's move on to typical summer snacks: ice cream. This is the dessert of choice for summer. It's delicious, refreshing, and reasonably affordable. Here we see Buhito wanting to try some ice cream because he's dying of heat and nothing he has at home is helping him cool down, so as a last resort, he had the great idea of bingeing on ice cream. As you can see, I don't think ice cream is a good option either because Buhito has no self-control and ate more than half a bucket of ice cream by himself in a matter of minutes. No ice cream will last that long!

Ola de calor, piscina rota, artefactos eléctricos inservibles, indigestión por exceso de helado, así pasara Buhito el verano, de esta excelente forma. Como ya no había forma de enfriar esas plumitas, lo recosté en mi cama y le coloque un par de cubitos de hielo para que no le dé un golpe de calor. No es fácil criar a un búho revoltoso, así que espero que de esta forma al menos se quede un momento quieto y no arrase con el último balde de helado que me quedo.

Heat wave, broken pool, broken appliances, indigestion from eating too much ice cream—that's how Buhito spent his summer, in this wonderful way. Since there was no way to cool those little feathers down, I laid him on my bed and put a couple of ice cubes on him so he wouldn't get heatstroke. It's not easy raising a rowdy owl, so I hope that this way he'll at least stay still for a moment and not devour the last bucket of ice cream I have left.
