I have a very intimate relationship with flowers, where I come from it is always like a summer in spring, warmth and flowers for everyone, which suggests me a lot, I see them everywhere. Currently, I am in Chile and since I arrived it has been: flowery, recently the winter started, people alert me about the gray landscape, the inclement cold and the emptiness of the flora in general. I don't know what the experience will be like but I am aware that everything is blooming around me, because in very dark stage flowers have always been present, but that is a story for another article.
In this post I tell you about flowers in fashion and how to make yours to be part of this trend.
Flowers have an important role in art, often related to prosperity, beauty, and abundance. However it can also represent death or sensuality depending on the author's subjectivity. For years they have been a subject of exhibition using other elements to show an emotional state, we can see it in Monet's lilies, Van Gogh's sunflowers, in the Renaissance and Frida Kahlo's tendency. Flowers increasingly dominate the catwalks, audiovisual material, even male artistic expressions, this is not really new, but their presence is greater, at least without so much prejudice.
According to my memory for about 10 years it's rare to see a catwalk without flowers. Is there a floral trend in your area that you remember? Mine is the 2019 CH collection, it has become my window of creativity. The flowers are natural pieces of art that if you go with a willingness to receive inspiration on the way you will get it with them. Just like today's model, I found it a couple of days ago walking under the madness of the cold and it became impossible not to photograph it, to recreate it in a drawing and then make it into a pin. Keep reading so you can see how to make it and wear it in your outfit without getting lost in the trend.
First I drew it to make a pattern for the fabric flower and give it my personal touch, for me writing and drawing are essential to develop a project.
Check Who Writes Learn Twice where I explain it deeply.
Now let's draw:
- Draw a circle establishing the diameter you want for your flower, this is the size of my hand.
- I like working from the micro to the macro, so I started with the center to draw the petals.
- I decided to make it more open as a representation that would look like this once the main character is fully bloomed, because with this cold I'm sure I'll miss it.
- Then I painted it playing with the lights and shadows that my ability and colors allow me.
Remember that art is recreation of reality, you can draw to the scale and magnitude you want.
The drawing helped me to decipher and decide on the necessary material:
- 5 red satin fabric circles of the same diameter drawn, it can also be lining fabric.
- 4 circles of half the diameter: 2 red and 2 black.
- Scissors
- Thread and needle, no matter what color.
- Optional: Felt tip and a pin.
Fold the small circles in half, those are the central petals, with the fold inwards the extremes are sewn as you see in the photo. Once surrounded, pucker or wrinkle the petals by stretching the thread, the tighter the smaller your central bud will be.
Now, fold the larger circles into 4, join their center with the previously made bud, leaving the waves out, petal by petal you get your rose and with the remaining circle of fabric, you sew it as it base.
This last step with the felt and the pin is optional, I like it because it works to add and remove it whenever I want, it can be like a pin on the clothes or a hair ornament, you can put glue or sew it too, this is a personal step.
Ready your floral accessory, here are two examples with color variations and tension in the bud. As you can see you can be creative to make your own version, the one that represents you the most.
