Democracy is a form of government where the people are given the opportunity to elect their various leaders through a transparent and credible process knowns as and called election. The people therefore determine who becomes their leaders.
Although there are various variants of democracy, the ultimate power however resides with the people. Most nations/countries run this type of government. Some are advanced while others are still in their early stages of democracy.
That said, Nigeria is one of those countries that operate democracy in a presidential form of government. Thus, every four years, new leaders emerge via the ballot box. The current tenure of the present government in the country will elapse on 29 May 2023. As a result of this, new administration with new leaders will be elected before then via the ballot box. Hence, general elections have thus been scheduled to begin on the 25 February 2023 for the Presidential and National Assembly (which is bicameral).
To that effect, a soci-economic group called the Ahamefula Development Initiative initiated and organised a 3-day awareness campaign to sensitise the people concerning the forthcoming general elections. During the said programme, various political office holders came and addressed the people on what they intend to do if elected into the various offices they are vying for.
Yours sincerely attended and took part in all the sessions. The various candidates of different political parties graced the occasion. There was also interactive sessions where these candidates were asked various questions regarding the expectations of the people they intend to represent. The candidates also answered them.
It was indeed a nice avenue for the people to see first-hand those who are vying various political offices and interact with them. Thuggery, election violence and voter aparthy were strongly condemned by all. From the look of things, the people have become well aware of their rights and the ultimate power in their thumbs to make a change by exercising their franchise.
We all pray for a successful 2023 general elections in Nigeria as the country is yearning for a positive change in the polity.
