Updates
Recently i decided to take up a bit of homesteading again, i use to do it before but i kind of put it to one side because i was going through some stuff mentally.
But now i am recovering and rebuilding my life i have schizophrenia and complex PTSD.
Now with everything going on it just makes sense to make sure i am providing for my family the best i can.
It has been a tough week not much to update at the moment plants take time to grow and the birds are new and few at the moment.
We been having crazy weather rain, snow and a bit of sun not overly helpful at the moment but there is really not much i can do about it.
I will continue as soon as it is not so bad weather, working in wet soil is very hard work so i need it to dry out a bit more and to not have any snow. 🤣
I have been having a lot of conversations lately about the state of the world or what we can do if either the world goes to complete shit or if the food shortages and inflation continues to grow.
Basically i think people are starting to panic
Don't worry, just start preparing, that is my advice here is just one of the many things you can do.
Food Shortages
We hear a lot about food shortages but the truth is there is tons of excess food to feed the world over several times.
It is more the systems we have in place to grow, equally share and distribute food to everyone are either broken or non existent.
This can be a massive problem depending where you are in the world and is going to be a nightmarish shock to others.
But all is not lost, i have the answer
All we need to do is go back to our natural instincts.
We are humans, hunter-gatherers and caretakers of the world.
No matter what you believe politically, religiously or whatever we have an innate ability, skills and knowledge to live off the land.
The problem is people have forgot because they have become dependent on systems man has put into place to make life convenient, this is a fragile situation to be in.
The reason this is fragile is because we are depending on governments and businesses to be in control of supplying our meals.
Often this can go wrong for multiple reasons that break out all over the world.
The Answer
Simply learn how to hunter-gather and grow your own excess food.
All the money in the world will not mean shit if the people stop producing, supply chains get broken and the food stop's coming.
You Can't Eat Money!
I lived on the streets, i have lived in the wilderness, where hunger is not an option because hungry people get sick and weak.
Learn the lay of your land
Some of things i will be sharing will not help you where you are, but it may give you some ideas more relevant to your area.
You have to learn about your physical world and be responsible for your part.
If every single person did this around the world, much less people would be hungry and a lot less people would be dependent on the broken systems.
The Dandelion
I live in the British Isles more specifically Northamptonshire, United Kingdom.
Here we have in abundance a plant that can be found almost anytime of the year.
It is a tufty hairy perennial 5-40cm (2-16 inches) high, with hollow stems and a produces a milky juice when cut. Leaves roughly toothed grow from the base of the plant and the flowers are a bright golden yellow with many individual petals.
Dandelion Uses
All parts can be used the bud, leaves and roots.
They can be used in salads and drinks.
Simply select and chop the leaves, mix with a dressing of your choice or cooked in butter. You can add other leaf types to make a mixed salad.
Dandelions can be made into a coffee or a tea
If you wash, dry and roast the roots, then simply grind roughly you will have dandelion coffee that you can use just like ordinary coffee.
If you boil and steep the flowers you can make a tea.
Dandelion has also be used as a medicine over the years.
Dandelions contain calcium and could provide you with 10% of your daily requirements.
They are also high in vitamin K.
Dandelions aid the digestive system and is a very good source of vitamin C.
The white milky substance you get from cutting the plant can be used on the skin as a cream and is highly alkaline.
Dandelions are also high in antioxidants and fiber both of which our bodies need.
Finally The Seeds
Kids love blowing these as they float away as you do, but you can actually harvest these and use them to grow young plants for micro salads all year round in a controlled setting.
Let me know what you think in the comments, i will be doing a video follow up where me and my grand daughter will show you how to work with Dandelions.
If you learn to work with nature and live off the land you are more likely to be Alive and Thriving as situations develop, no matter what they maybe.
I have been more focused on working on a curation and onboarding project i created as well as arranging things so i can be more active on Hive.
