In this post we are going to understand four things about "ALBINISM"
[1] What is Albinism?
[2] How wide spread is Albinism?
[3] How does it affect an individual daily life?
[4] What can help those living with Albinism to live with their condition?
Albinism is a genetic disorder in which ones eyes, skin or hair have little or no pigmentation, it affects only the eyes in some cases. Albinism could be attributed to 17 century Portuguese explorers, as they sailed along the west African coast they sighted dark-skin and white skin people. They called the dark-skin people "NEGRO" and the white-skinned people "ALBINOS"
In Portuguese language black is called "NEGRO" and White is called "ALBINOS"
While Albinism is more noticeable among dark skinned people, it affects people of all nation and races. Out of every 20,000 people one must be living with Albinism. World over any Albino that to protect their skin also risks developing skin cancer, especially those in tropical areas.
Albinos can protect their skin by wearing suitable clothing. This is why wr always see them wearing clothes and a wide brimmed straw hat even while working as farmers in the field. Albinos must wear long sleeves at all times to protect their skin from cancer.
Albinos feel that despite all the efforts to protect themselves, they feel their body is burning and sometimes when they scratch skin, it peels right off their fingernails.
Apart from protecting their skin with suitable clothes, wearing a wide brimmed straw hat, another option is to apply sunscreen lotion if available. A lotion with atleast 15 protection factors is recommended. It can be applied 30 minutes before exposure to sun, and after every 2 hours.
In Albinos the pigment in the iris that protect the sun from entering the eyes other than through the pupil is nearly translucent. Many Albinos wear cap, a visor or UV protective sun glasses, others opt for tinted lenses.
There are many forms of ALBINISM but the two main categories include: OCULOCUTANEUS and OCULAR Albinism. One type is associated with HERMANSKY-PYDLAK-SYNDROME.(HPS). Those with these kind of ALBINISM have the tendency to bruise or bleed easily. There is a high concentration of such ALBINISM in the Porto Rican population, it is estimated that one in every 1800 population has it.
