I have to chuckle thinking how dragonflies sabotaged my walk in the main street of Noosa Junction yesterday morning. You see I was out and about in a different setting away from the beach for once. Coffee at the Black Pepper Cafe was the drawcard for me and worth the 30 minute drive up the coastal road and a walk down the road from the public carpark.

I really like sitting at the table on the sidewalk soaking up the atmosphere, I try to do this as often as often as I can, not only for the coffee at the Black Pepper but also for the cosmopolitan feel I get when drinking coffee here. It conjures up memories of me in sidewalk cafes in European cities like Rome, Florence, Porto, Madrid, Frankfurt, Berlin, Munich etc. I have been lucky enough to visit these wonderful cities before covid.

So here I was enjoying my coffee when I happen to see a dragonfly sitting on green leafy plants over to be my left. Surprisingly this one was happy to sit which is unusual as generally dragonflies in my experience stop for a quick moment and then off again, and are usually very hard to photograph. Of course out came my iPhone, I was not going to miss out on this photo opportunity!

Then even more interesting this dragonfly moves over to the support rope off the shade cloth. It was proving to be the best model of all times staying in this position for ages with its wings spread out like delicate beautifully translucent gold patterned laced.
This photo has to be my favourite.

This photo has to be a close second favourite. I do not know why its wings went over its head like they did, maybe it was due to the concentrating on whatever it saw on the rope. I have to say I like the effect of the wording of the Black Pepper Cafe and phone number behind the dragonfly.

Eventually the dragonfly flew away and we left to walk back up the street as it was Wednesday walk day, one of my reasons for visiting Noosa Junction.
But, my interesting dragonfly walking was far from over because as I walked around the front garden in the midday sun, I saw a number of dragonflies, much smaller in size than the one at Black Pepper Cafe.
The first shot I am sorry to say is a little fuzzy but I am sharing because its wings were outstretched. The dragonfly is sitting on the dead grevillea tree branches

The second little dragonfly is sitting on the grass, and I got two shots. The first one shows off the elongated long skinny body while the second shot is a good clear one of its wing outstretched see through wings. To me the dragonfly shape dramatically changes for the better when its wings spread out.

And so ended a very different Wednesday walk to my usual ones Mr Nice Guy . I like different out of the box walks when they come along, they add variety and spice up my life. Keep me on my toes.
I was very intrigued as to why there were so many dragonflies, these fantastic insects were around and why they sat in the one position as long as they did so I did a bit of research online.
Here are some facts I found out about dragonflies:
- there are at least 5,000 different species
- are many different sizes
- the larval stage varies with each species, some up to 2 years, and they are aquatic
- the heads of dragonflies is mostly eyes
- they are great controllers of the mosquitoes
- they use their legs to catch their prey
- they are widely studied with engineers greatly intrigued with the flying abilities
- the lifespans of each species vary anywhere from 2 weeks to one year.

ps: I did not find out why they were sitting for as long as they were for me on Wednesday. Maybe someone would kindly let me know. I will appreciate it.

Steven D. Farmer, is a Spiritualist, teacher and writer who has written a book called Animal Spirit Guides, here is some of what he has to say about dragonflies from a spiritual perspective:-
He says that when a dragonfly shows up, it means:
- you need to tap into your deeper emotions
- magic and mystery is re-awakening in you
- you may be going through more a transformation than a change.
If a dragonfly is your power animal:
- you are emotional intense and passionate
- you may find you need to ground yourself now and then
- you have the ability to see through illusions
