Well hello there, everyone once again in our wonderful #WednesdayWalk -ing community around the world!
I canβt believe that itβs Wednesday already! (actually it's Thursdπ² oh no it's not! π± It's Friday here now already..π³
Anyway, it feels like just a couple of days ago, when last Wednesday I was sitting here, walking with you and discovering some amazing destinations and seeing your homes through your eyes and it is a pleasure to be here once again sharing your world with you and part two of my ROCKIN THE ROCKS ON THE SYDNEY ROCKS WALKING TOUR with the lovely Sofi, who took myself and a small group of people for a walk around the historical rocks area in Sydney to share the sites and the stories with us.
And for those of you who missed it last Wednesday, here is the link to catch up so please jump in and enjoy @chocolatescorpi/rockin-the-rocks-on-the-sydney-rocks-walking-tour-part-1
So now I would like to share part 2 of these sites with you too, so please, put your walking shoes on, grab your water bottle and join me as I share with you the last half of this fantastic, fun and fact filled tour of the historic Rocks in Sydney, Australia.
So as you can see, we ventured along until we came to the Discovery Museum, but unfortunately, a visit inside wasn't on the cards for this time, but it will be next time.
Sofi then took us to the tale filled Greenway Lane and as you will see, there is a special reason why we stopped in this narrow old alley way.
And that's because British born 'gentleman' convict architect Francis Greenway became a favourite with Governor Macquarie who allowed him to set up Australia's first private architecture practice, which was around the corner in George Street to design and construct many notable buildings still standing today.
Now you may ask why am I looking at a photo of what looks like to be a cave that's been filled in?
Well that's because this opening is exposing the the true geological makeup and formation that the Rocks is- and that is Sandstone- below and now above ground, as all of the first convicts were allowed to quarry it to build a chaotic home for themselves, so most of the buildings as you have seen in my previous post and will see are made from this very same sandstone.
In my humble opinion Government should act wisely to send out another fleet to take us all back to England or to some other place more likely to answer than this wretched Country, where scarcely anything is to be seen but Rocksβ¦
Rev Richard Johnson, first chaplain to the colony of New South Wales, 1788 https://rocksdiscoverymuseum.com/stories/the-rock-of-the-rocks
Sandstone used in buildings such as this
And this was one of many poor men (and women) prisoners that had the displeasure of quarrying the stone And remember just how HOT Australia can get, especially in Summer and that 100% of these convicts AKA the first settlers were from the UK- the United Kingdom and none of them would have ever experienced heat like ours, day after day, out in the open under the son with the barest of tools with which to quarry the Sandstone and eventually build their cottages and shops with....
And then we passed these step, which I found to be intriguing, especially with the name of Bethel St...
And then down on water level, I saw the architecturally stunning ANS Co building (The Australasian Steam Navigation Company) and fell in love with all of the angles, the turrets, the spires, steps, walkways, windows, gables, balustrades and just had to capture everything about her (and yes, I see her as a she..because she's sooo pretty...π€£. and a bit prim and proper too..π..)
And so captured her from every angles, taking in all of her immense beauty and if you are a fan or #archtitecture like I me, then you might want to get to know her a little better by reading through this http://www.shfa.nsw.gov.au/sydney-About_us-Heritage_role-Heritage_and_Conservation_Register.htm&objectid=62
And right next door to her was the ground level wharf buildings, now a range of restaurants serving the millions of tourists every day that pass through this amazing area.
And I love that every building still maintains so many original artifacts from those days of toil, such as the rope and pulley systems above the barn doors
And now here you can see the 3 integral layers to the contemporary Rocks.
The old buildings built with the Sandstone they stand on and then the new coming in behind and above.
And here are some random photos to finish off the tour for you.
Such a wonderful mishmash of old, REALLY OLD and styles in the Rocks
I wish I could show you more and I will, but really you need to see it for yourself to be able to appreciate all that it entails and all that went into creating this incredible little spot in Sydney.
And what a magical journey this was and I canβt wait to go back again and experience it all and so much more, so I can sit there and relax, check out all the cafes and bars that I saw and soak up the atmosphere too.
In fact, I found a backpackers right there, so thatβs where Iβll be staying next time I think!
Now you know why I was so relieved to be able to board the Southern Swan and swan around Sydney Harbour like a lady of leisure here with my feet up for a while after that walk don't you! @chocolatescorpi/jdzkmcrk
And if you would like to see some more artistically striking photos of this awesome spot, the click on this link here too @chocolatescorpi/capturing-the-rocks-in-styles-tones-and
BUT, BUT, BUT, don't forget, the best way to have any experience- especially THIS experience, if you ever get a chance to, is to do it yourself with your own 2 feet, 2 ears, eyes and camera, so please think about your next holiday and book you tour here https://www.rockswalkingtours.com.au
