Hi fellow Hiveians,
Today I wanted to share some pictures from an apple picking trip we took over the weekend, and it being the last one of the year!
Late Season Apple Walk
Apple picking has been a staple in my life for as long as I can remember, I remember starting to go with my parents probably when I was around 12 or 13 because my siblings were of the appropriate age where it was a good day instead of a waste of time and fighting. During all of those times though, one of the things that I didn't really realize until this recent trip is that I never do it towards the end of the season, always in the early-to-middle part of it! I was for sure missing out, but we made up for that with this one!
This farm here has a LOT of varieties of apples which is great. We were also pleasantly surprised because we often shop at their farm store but it's in an entirely different area than where they grow most of their food! I was certainly impressed, I didn't know they owned that much land but they do an awesome job at keeping it all up. The farm was in great shape, where some are kind of shabby or in shambles which is unfortunate. Macoun here is one of the early season apples, mostly available in the first couple of weeks. It's a pretty good apple in itself, though not my favorite but I happily pick them. They were far out of season for this trip though, so I didn't get any this year.
What I was surprised about was the number of apples that were still on the trees! The variety in this one here is one of my new late-season favorites, called Snow Sweet and it is a little bit of a misnomer on the name. It was closer to the kind I prefer which is Cortland, Macintosh or even Macoun. I was thinking it would be gross like an Empire or something but it was not at all like that! It had a delicious and crisp bite to it, with a very similar flavor to the ones I liked so I was really glad to have found it. It surprised me because there was only two rows of the apples! I thought there would certainly be more but being a very late-season apple, I'm not surprised they kept it to a smaller number.
I know for sure that next year I am going to go back for this same variety, perhaps even at the same time as we did here! It was a wonderful apple and will keep me with a belly full of apples for at least a week with the amount we picked today!
As you can see, this place has a LOT of rows! It was amazing and definitely one of the reasons that we will be going back here next year. This is only a third of the rows! They had two more full length to my left, and this row went double of the same amount behind me. These people don't fuck around when it comes to apples, let me tell you lol.
What's also really nice is they have a lot of varieties of apples. Not all of them are ones that I enjoy eating, such as Evercrisp, Honeycrisp, Golden Delicious, and many others. I mainly stick to my preferred flavor varieties which you can see two of here, Macoun and Cortland. Those are definitely my preferred ones but I like the opportunity to go around and sample the different ones. They had another brand like Golden Crisp or some shit that I never heard of before and it looked horrific but I said fuck it and tried it anyway because you never know, it could turn into something good. Nope, it was disgusting hahaha but that's the good thing about walking around with so many kinds. Give them a try and see what you like or don't like!
As you can see, this place was fucking gigantic hahaha. We were really excited to find a new one, because the ones that we normally go to are a lot further away which isn't much of an issue but it's always nice to find new ones and in a little bit of a closer zone to where you're at, that is always a good thing! The funny thing about it too is that my wife and I have driven past it often but never really thought of stopping in and checking it out. Luckily my wife did once a week or so ago with a friend and then saw how big it was! This is absolutely solidified as a return trip every year from now on, as long as we are in the area!
Some people want to go to fancy hotels and shit. We just want to explore farms and be outside with friends and family as much as we can!
