Hi, Kia Ora, Xin chào my dear hive friends,
Have you ever considered making changes to your everyday life so you can enjoy good health when you reach your old age? I am pretty sure everyone will have that thought at some stage in their life. I have been practising healthy habits for a while now because of my sedentary working lifestyle. I believe it is very important to make small changes to improve my health and wellbeing.
I used to sit more than 8 hours per day which is bad for my physical and mental health. I wasn't aware of it until I experienced neck and shoulder pain at the end of my working days. At first, I couldn't understand why because I adjusted the height of my screens, my table and my chair correctly. At some point, I thought it might be a sign of getting older. LOL I was just 30 years old at that time.
However, when I read the recommendation and articles online, I realised that maybe there was more to my problem than posture as I spend a third of my day sitting inside the office. So I decided to make some small changes to my working routine by standing up and moving as much as possible.
One of the small changes I made recently is taking a leisure walk every day after finishing work to a community centre near my home. It is around 15 minutes walking one way so it will be easy for me to spend half an hour walking and enjoying the sun.
I believe this will bring many benefits to my life. I can increase my time moving during the day (I already stand up for 3 hours at my desk) and reduce sitting time.
In addition, working indoors means I don't get enough sunlight throughout the day. I understand that my body needs vitamin D from sunlight to function properly. It also helps me to have a better sleep at night as well. Therefore, by joining the Wednesday Walk community, it is a great way for me to share with you my experiences and hopefully it will encourage you to join me to make changes if you have a similar working lifestyle.
We are in the last month of Spring in NZ and luckily, this week we have got beautiful weather so far, which is perfect to enjoy my walk. I would feel really bad if I am not making the most out of this weather. I know for sure, we don't have beautiful days like this for long.
Also, there is one more thing I would like to do to make my walk more enjoyable. I've got many young tomatoes plants in my small garden. There is not enough room for all of them to grow so I decided to bring some of them to a community garden near home and grow them there.
As the summer approaches, days are getting longer here. So by walking there every day after work, I can look after them properly.
I like this community centre because they take a good care of their garden to grow plenty of flowers and veggies for people in need. Each season, they would plant a different variety. At the moment, the garden has plenty of spinach and lettuce. I also stopped by a berry garden to get some fruits. Soon we are going to have peaches and grapes there as well.
On the weekend, I often spend more time walking to a park near the community garden to collect some dills and parsley for my soup. This is also a place I would come to pick up wildflowers for my DIY dried flowers cards and photo frames.
I am so grateful to live in a city center but still have access to nature within a walking distance. This is one of the best things I love about New Zealand.
I know it is hard to break our habits but I want you to understand that you can make small changes to your lifestyle. Just like me, I am making a schedule to stand up for at least 3 hours in my desk and go for a walk and stay under the sun for around half an hour per day. I understand we all have busy lives but just a bit of time to do right things will benefit you in many ways. To our good health, my friends. Cheers.
