My wife and I made it out for a nice evening walk along the river bank in Crammond. It was raining quite a bit - but we were equipped (wellies and umbrellas), so no problem !
Its a tidal river (atleast the mouth is) and the tide was out a bit, so all the yachts had bottomed out. The last time we came, these were still on dry land from over-wintering. Nice to see them all back in the water.
It was quite wet and a little misty out to sea. With Edinburgh being on the east coast we often get mist coming in from the North Sea.
The walk up the river is quite nice, with a number of features, and good info boards telling you whats-what as you go. Its normally quite busy - but the rain scared everyone away tonight !
Above is an old foundry, next to the weir. Its a good few hundred years old. All along the river you can see signs of previous occupation an industry, which is quite interesting.
I like how they have incorporated the ruins of the foundry into the riverside path - quite nice !
I took a pic of one of the dedication plaques on one of the benches by the foundry - such a lovely message !
And one of our favourite features along the path (above). Can anyone hear a chello ?
And sticking with the tree theme - how about that for a root system ! The bedrock in the bank has forced the trees roots out over the surface of the hillside - quite cool !
And another cool tree - quite alive, but growing out of the hillside to the left at quite an angle.
And here is a pic taken just above the weir by the foundry. I love how clear the water is just before the weir's edge - you can see all of the blocks forming the weir.
Above - a random view down the river.
We walked as far as the steps that go up and over the sheer edged parts of the river. We were too tired for going up and over (there are quite a few steps) ! So we just turned around.
And when we got back to the rivers mouth, a whole heap of swans had gathered by the waters edge. I counted 33. What was weird is that none of them had any cygnets. There are other pairs in the city that are busy looking after their cygnets now. Maybe these ones are too young, or dont have a partner (I understand that they pair for life).
And one last shot looking out to see, and to Crammond Island in the distance. You can walk out to it at a full low tide - but as can be seen, the tide was too far in to do it tonight.
Anyway, I'm glad we got out for a nice evening walk, even if it was in the rain. I hope you have all had a lovely wednesday. All the best from a wet Edinburgh !
