Its our third night in Venice, Italy and this evening we went out for a walk along the seafront from St Marks Square. We had gotten the water bus over from our hotel.
We timed it just right and the sun was starting to set just as our water-bus made it to St Marks Square.
This was the view from the dock where we got off. The tower is the Campanile de San Marco.
It was still busy out, and this row of souvenir kiosks were there to take advantage.
Above is the Doge's Palace and the Colonna de San Marco. The column (colonna) carries the emblem of Venice - the winged lion !
And above is the column and the campanile together, with a view into St Marks Square - the main plaza in Venice.
From the square we walked along the sea front (Adriatic Sea). The view above looks out to the Island of Saint Giorgio Maggiore.
Above is the famous bridge of sighs, which is the last place where prisoners can see the canals of Venice when they are taken to prison !
We passed the statue above a little further along. Its the monumento a Vittorio Emmanuelle II - Italy's first king !
And the church above is a really special place ! This was the first place in the world where Vivaldi's 4 Seasons was performed !! He was from Venice !
As we walked further along the sunset was really setting the atmosphere !
Above is one of the side canals. Its not so easy to see in the picture, but the white tower at the back was really leaning to the left. We've seen quite a few like that in Venice and its happening because some of the islands are sinking !
Another side canal, and here you can see a marked difference - this part of Venice looks a lot newer and more modern.
And above is the view from where we turned back. What a beautiful sunset. We just sat there at the waters edge taking it in for a few minutes.
I'm so glad we went back out. Trust me, it was quite a struggle persuading our teenager that it would be worth the trip to go back to St Marks Square !! But we all enjoyed it, and bribed her with pizza for dinner (when in Italy !).
Thats our Wednesday walk for this week - and as usual I'm looking forward to seeing the rest of the posts from around the world !
