On my visit to Old Havana I always like to pass by the Plaza of the Catedral. Although I have been there more than once, I never stop admiring on each visit the atmosphere of the place. It is incredible how they have managed to preserve that style of old and colonial city that so attracts all visitors to Havana.
The square is wide, cobblestoned, and when I stand in the middle I feel something special. Being surrounded by so much history and so much art impresses me. Knowing that through this site have passed over the years such different Cubans: bishops, rich merchants, counts, slaves, and every inhabitant throughout the centuries, amazes me and makes me feel a little insignificant, but in a beautiful way, as if I were stepping on something very important. Here I always find something new to admire, or rather, something old to remember.
The most notable thing about the place is, without a doubt, the Cathedral, the building for which this site is known. The Cathedral is majestic and absolutely beautiful. It not only impresses for the imposing nature of its structure from the outside but also for the beauty of its interior. But the square is not only the Cathedral: around it there are other buildings and mansions that have been restored and preserved with such care that they seem frozen in time, and that can currently be visited, since they house museums and art galleries.
It is very pleasant to find here that the atmosphere of the place also remains alive. This is, moreover, a tourist area and one of the attractions is to preserve the traditions of life just as the habaneros lived it in other centuries. In spite of the tourists, the photos and the cameras, the square keeps its essence. That is why we can see women wearing the typical dresses of the time, with colorful scarves in their hair. Some sell flowers, others read the fortune of the visitors and of anyone who has the courage to want to know what awaits them.
The Plaza de la Catedral always manages to surprise me. I, as a habanera, feel proud that we still have a place like this, so well preserved and with so much personality. Each time I go I am left with the same feeling: this is the real Havana, the one that does not go out of fashion.

En mi visita a la Habana Vieja siempre me gusta pasar por la Plaza de la Catedral. Aunque he estado allí más de una vez, nunca dejo de admirar en cada visita el ambiente del lugar. Es increíble cómo han sabido conservar ese estilo de ciudad antigua y colonial que tanto atrae de La Habana a todos los visitantes.
La plaza es amplia, adoquinada, y cuando me paro en medio siento algo especial. Estar rodeada de tanta historia y tanto arte me impresiona. Saber que por este sitio han transitado a lo largo de los años cubanos tan diferentes: obispos, ricos comerciantes, condes, esclavos y cada habitante a lo largo de los siglos, me admira y me hace sentir un poco insignificante, pero de una manera bonita, como si estuviera pisando algo muy importante. Aquí siempre encuentro algo nuevo que admirar, o mejor dicho, algo antiguo que recordar.
Lo más notable del lugar es sin duda, la Catedral, la edificación por la que se conoce este sitio. La Catedral es majestuosa y absolutamente hermosa. No solo impresiona por lo imponente de su estructura desde afuera sino también por la belleza de su interior. Pero la plaza no es solo la Catedral, a su alrededor hay otros edificios y palacetes que han sido restaurados y conservados con tanto cuidado que parecen congelados en el tiempo, y que actualmente se pueden recorrer, pues guardan museos y galerías de arte.
Es muy agradable encontrarnos aquí con que también el ambiente del lugar se mantiene vivo. Esta es además, una zona turística y una de las atracciones es preservar las tradiciones de la vida tal como la vivían los habaneros de otros siglos. A pesar de los turistas, de las fotos y las cámaras, la plaza mantiene su esencia. Por eso podemos ver a las mujeres vistiendo los típicos vestidos de la época, con pañuelos coloridos en sus cabellos. Unas venden flores, otras leen la fortuna a los visitantes y a cualquiera que tenga el coraje de querer saber qué le espera.
La Plaza de la Catedral siempre logra sorprenderme. Yo como habanera, me siento orgullosa de que todavía tengamos un lugar así, tan bien conservado y con tanta personalidad. Cada vez que voy me quedo con la misma sensación, esto es La Habana de verdad, la que no pasa de moda.
