If there is one thing I am grateful for about my visit to Ushuaia, it is that I took advantage of every free moment I had to go for a walk and take in the beautiful scenery. After staying in the city for so long, I felt like I already knew almost every corner, but there was always something new to see. One of those things I had yet to see was the city's shopping mall, so one morning I set out determined to go there. But finally I got distracted just before I got there, and I ended up going back home without seeing it, but having spent a nice afternoon enjoying the sun 😃.
Si hay algo que agradezco de mi visita a Ushuaia, es que aproveché cada ratito que tenía libre para salir a caminar y llenarme de esos paisajes hermosos. Después de haber estado tanto tiempo hospedada en la ciudad, sentía que ya conocía casi todos los rincones, pero siempre había algo nuevo para ver. Una de esas cosas que me faltaba conocer era el shopping de la ciudad, así que una mañana salí decidida a ir hasta ahí. Pero finalmente me distraje justo antes de llegar, y terminé volviendo a casa sin verlo, pero habiendo pasado una buena tarde disfrutando el sol 😃.
Ushuaia's waterfront is not that long and it is possible to walk from end to end if you take the time to do so. On my regular trips, when I left the hostel, I always turned to the left side of the city, as that is where the Bahía Encerrada (Enclosed Bay) is located, an option for a nature walk near the city. But to go to the shopping centre you had to go to the north side, so that's where I went.
La costanera de Ushuaia no es tan larga y es posible recorrerla de punta a punta caminando si te tomas el tiempo para hacerlo. En los viajes regulares, cuando salía del hostel siempre doblaba hacia el lado izquierdo de la ciudad, ya que que en esa zona se encuentra la Bahía Encerrada, una opción de paseo con contacto con la naturaleza cerca de la ciudad. Pero para ir al shopping había que dirigirse hacia el lado norte, así que para ahí fui.
According to the map it would take about 45 minutes to walk from the hostel to the shopping centre, so it seemed like a good plan before I started my volunteer shift. In this part of the city's waterfront is Ushuaia's commercial port, so most of the boats and boats for tours are located here. And of course, a lot of tourists in the surrounding area.
Según el mapa serían unos 45 minutos caminando desde el hostel hasta el shopping, así que me pareció un buen plan para antes de empezar con mi turno de voluntariado. En esta parte de la costanera de la ciudad se encuentra el puerto comercial de Ushuaia, por lo que la mayor cantidad de barcos y lanchas para paseos se encuentra acá. Y por supuesto, un montón de turistas en los alrededores.
But walking a few more blocks along the coast, the tourist area ends and the place becomes quieter. On this part of the road are the facilities of the Argentinean Navy, and there are also boats, but they are now part of the official forces. Not many people come walking along this part because there is also public transport that takes you around this area, but my idea was to stretch my legs.
Pero caminando unas cuantas cuadras más sobre la costa, ya la zona turística se termina y el lugar se vuelve más tranquilo. En esta parte del camino se encuentran las instalaciones de la Armada Argentina, y también hay barcos, pero ya son parte de las fuerzas oficiales. No mucha gente viene caminando por esta parte porque también hay transporte público que te lleva por esa zona, pero mi idea era estirar las piernas.
On this tour you can see what I always remark about Ushuaia and its changing weather in a matter of minutes. In the short time it took me to cross the area of the Navy building, the sky changed from cloudy to clear, so much so that it seemed like different times. That's how the whole walk went, with intervals of sun, clouds, wind and even a little drizzle. Typical weather at the End of the World.
En este paseo se puede ver lo que siempre remarco de Ushuaia y su clima cambiante en cuestión de minutos. En el poco tiempo que tardé en atravesar la zona del edificio de la Armada, el cielo cambio de nublado a despejado, tanto que parecían momentos diferentes. Así fue todo el paseo, con intervalos de sol, nubes, viento y hasta un poco de llovizna. Clima típico en el Fin del Mundo.
By the time I reached the shopping area, after walking along the side of the road, I found a descent to the beach, the first one I could see after 4 kilometres of walking. All this part of the coast is occupied by something and there is no drop-off to the beach, so I was surprised that there was one right next to the shopping centre. By then, the weather was nice and I decided to go and sit there for a while. This was one of those moments when I couldn't believe that a casual stroll on a random day could lead me to such a beautiful place. I was grateful for my present, and sat there for a while enjoying the atmosphere ❤️.
Para cuando llegué a la zona del shopping, después de haber caminado por la vereda al costado de la ruta, encontré una bajada a la playa, la primera que veía después de 4 kilómetros de caminata. Toda esta parte de la costa está ocupada por alguna cosa y no hay bajada a la playa, así que me sorprendió que hubiera una justo al costado del shopping. Para entonces, el clima estaba lindo y decidí ir a sentarme un rato ahí. Este fue uno de esos momentos en los que no podía creer que un paseo casual, en un día cualquiera, pudiera llevarme a un lugar tan hermoso. Agradecí por mi presente, y me quedé sentada un buen rato disfrutando el ambiente ❤️.
In the end, I found it more interesting to stay there on the beach than to go shopping. The day was looking good, and unbelievably it wasn't that cold. The big spoiler of all this is that I ended up leaving Ushuaia after almost six months of my stay and I never went into that shopping centre. Everyone told me that it's small and that I didn't miss much, so I have no regrets: shopping malls I can visit near my home in Buenos Aires, but seeing landscapes like that, only there 😃.
Finalmente, me terminó pareciendo más interesante quedarme ahí en la playa que entrar al shopping. El día pintaba muy bien, e increíblemente no hacía tanto frío. El gran spoiler de todo esto es que me terminé yendo de Ushuaia después de casi seis meses de estadía y nunca entré a ese shopping. Todos me dijeron que es pequeño y que no me perdía de gran cosa así que no me lamento: shoppings puedo visitar cerca de mi casa en Buenos Aires, pero ver paisajes como ese, solo ahí 😃.
