According to the statistics thrown by my Google Maps from January 2023, which is when I made this trip, I only walked about 100 km in total. However, I doubt this number a lot because in several of the places where I was trekking I had no signal, so there are probably many more. This summer was great because we used our legs to go to a lot of great places, we really walked a lot, like when we were on the Trail on the way to Cerro Fitz Roy, in the province of Santa Cruz, where we spent our whole day admiring some amazing landscapes. Sin embargo, dudo mucho de este número porque en varios de los lugares en los que estuve haciendo trekking no tenía señal, asi que probablemente sean muchos más. Este verano fue genial porque usamos nuestras piernas para ir a un montón de lugares geniales, de verdad caminamos un montón, como cuando estuvimos en la Senda camino al Cerro Fitz Roy, en la provincia de Santa Cruz, donde pasamos nuestro día completo admirando unos paisajes increíbles. This path leads you to the base of the highest hill in the town of El Chaltén. It is one of the must-sees that you have to see if you are vacationing here: a 6-hour trekking one way, on a 10 km long path. It sounds like a lot, and it is, so you have to go well rested, with suitable shoes, a coat and enough food. It sounded like a cool adventure so we didn't hesitate to go on it and started the tour at 10 AM. It was summer so we would have sunlight until approx 11 PM 😃.
Esta senda te conduce hasta la base del cerro más alto del pueblo de El Chaltén. Es uno de los imperdibles que tenes que ver si estas vacacionando acá: un trekking de 6 horas solo de ida, en un camino de 10 km de longitud. Suena bastante, y lo es, por lo que hay que ir bien descansado, con calzado adecuado, abrigo y comida suficiente. Sonaba como una aventura genial, así que no dudamos en recorrerla y empezamos el recorrido a las 10 AM. Era verano, así que tendríamos luz solar hasta las 11 PM aprox 😃.
Our first stop was at the viewpoint of Cerro Fitz Roy. Supposedly from that point we were going to see it from the front, but the cloudiness prevented us a bit. In any case, the landscapes we had seen so far had been worth it and we could still get a little closer to the hill. After spending a while there we continued walking, and the weather seemed to improve more and more, the clouds were moving and our hope of seeing the hill a little clearer increased ❤️.
Nuestra primera parada fue en el mirador del Cerro Fitz Roy. Supuestamente desde ese punto lo íbamos a ver de frente, pero la nubosidad nos lo impidió un poco. De cualquier forma, los paisajes que habíamos visto hasta entonces habían valido la pena y todavía podríamos acercarnos un poco más al cerro. Después de pasar un rato ahí seguimos caminando, y el clima parecía mejorar cada vez más, las nubes se corrían y nuestra esperanza de ver al cerro un poco más nítido aumentaba ❤️.
The weather in southern Argentina is cold, so we chose summer to go for a walk there. That day it was about 10°C so we were quite warm, but along the way we will have wrapped up and unsheltered a few times. That is what they recommend you to walk around here: wear plenty of "layered" clothing, so that you can wear enough clothing at all times. At one point it sleeted even though there was plenty of sun, so I was glad I had a waterproof jacket as well 😅.
El clima en el sur de Argentina es frío, por lo que elegimos el verano para ir a caminar por allí. Ese día hacian unos 10°C por lo que estabamos bastante abrigados, pero en todo el camino nos habremos abrigado y desabrigado unas cuantas veces. Eso es lo que te recomiendan para caminar por acá: usar bastante ropa "en capas", para que puedas usar las ropa suficiente en cada momento. En un momento cayó aguanieve a pesar de que había bastante sol, por lo que me alegré de tener una campera impermeable también 😅.
When we reached km 8 of the trail, we could already have an incredible panoramic view of the entire mountain range. Luckily the clouds had given up a bit and everything looked beautiful and imposing. The mountains of this region are made of solid gray granite, something I had never seen before and they made this trip unique. Also, on this trip I saw snow again after 12 years, so I was quite excited. At this point we already had 4 hours of walking on us: we were calm and at our pace, at times there was a lot of wind and dirt was flying, but nothing matters when you are in a place as wonderful as this ❤️.
Cuando llegamos al km 8 del sendero, ya pudimos tener una vista panorámica increíble de todo el cordón montañoso. Por suerte las nubes habían cedido un poco y todo se veía lindo e imponente. Las montañas de esta región son de granito gris y macizo, algo que nunca había visto antes y volvieron único este viaje. Además, en este viaje volví a ver nieve después de 12 años, por lo que estaba bastante emocionada. Para este punto ya teníamos encima 4 horas de caminata: ibamos tranquilos y a nuestro paso, por momentos había mucho viento y volaba tierra, pero nada te importa cuando estas en un lugar tan maravilloso como este ❤️.
Our second small scheduled stop was very close to there, at the "Poincenot" mountain camp. This campground is actually an area where camping is allowed, but it's just that. There is no service of any kind, just a bathroom that was in the worst condition I've ever seen, but nothing else. People come to this place to camp with the idea of staying overnight to see the sunrise at the base of the hill, but this is not for everyone: due to the freezing temperatures that this place reaches at night, it is necessary to have special equipment for the cold, as well as provisions and also the physical condition to carry all your camping stuff for at least 8 km. There were also informative signs on what to do if you see a puma, so there are also wild animals 😶.
Nuestra segunda pequeña parada programada era muy cerca de ahí, en el campamento de montaña "Poincenot". Este camping en realidad es un área en la que está permitido acampar, pero es solo eso. No hay servicio de ningún tipo, solo un baño que estaba en las peores condiciones que ví, pero nada más. La gente viene a este lugar a acampar con la idea de quedarse a pasar la noche para ir a ver el amanecer a la base del cerro, pero esto no es para todos: por las temperaturas congeladas que alcanza este lugar por la noche es necesario tener equipamiento especial para el frio, además de provisiones y también la condición física para acarrear todas tus cosas de campamento durante al menos 8 km. También había carteleria informativa sobre qué hacer en caso de ver algún puma, así que también hay animales salvajes 😶.
Arriving at the camp meant having completed 80% of the way, but from what those who had already gone there told us, the last stretch was the worst. Several people told us the same thing but I didn't want to be scared and live my own experience, so I went without fear. We took advantage of the stop to hydrate ourselves and eat a little more: if the worst part was yet to come, we had to be prepared, but with the satisfaction that we would have the most beautiful reward of all, which would be reaching the end of the trail ❤️.
Llegar al campamento fue haber completado el 80% del camino, pero por lo que nos dijeron los que ya habían ido hasta allá, el último tramo era el peor. Varias personas nos dijeron lo mismo pero yo no quería asustarme y vivir mi propia experiencia, así que por las dudas fui sin miedo. Aprovechamos la parada para hidratarnos y comer otro poco: si la peor parte estaba por venir había que estar preparado, pero con la satisfacción de que tendríamos la recompensa más linda de todas que sería llegar al final del sendero ❤️.
