Have you ever visited Guanabacoa? Its name, of indigenous origin, is believed to mean "place abundant in water," and it's no coincidence: this city, located on the outskirts of Havana, was famous for its springs. Among them, the most remembered is La Cotorra, which flowed right at the entrance to the city. A mineral water bottling plant operated there for years; today it lies in ruins, but its name lives on in the memory of its inhabitants. Even now, the people of Guanabacoa simply call that area La Cotorra, even though the spring no longer flows.

¿Alguna vez han visitado Guanabacoa? Su nombre, de origen indígena, se cree que significa “lugar abundante en aguas”, y no es casual: esta ciudad, ubicada en la periferia de La Habana, fue famosa por sus manantiales. Entre ellos, el más recordado es el de La Cotorra, que brotaba en la entrada misma de la ciudad. Allí funcionó durante años una embotelladora de agua mineral que hoy se encuentra en ruinas, pero cuyo nombre sigue vivo en la memoria de sus habitantes. Aún hoy, los guanabacoenses llaman a esa zona simplemente La Cotorra, aunque el manantial ya no fluya.
Further along, we come to the Guanabacoa Amphitheater, an open-air cultural space located a few steps from the town center, designed to host musical, theatrical, and community performances. Although not as well-known as other Havana venues, it has been a key meeting point for the artistic and popular life of the area.
I passed by the Escolapios school, the site of the first Piarist presence in the Americas, with its iconic building that left a profound educational, cultural, and spiritual mark on the community. Although it no longer operates as a school, years ago, when my son was in high school, his school was located in this significant place, remembered as a breeding ground for distinguished citizens. Its legacy lives on in the memory of Guanabacoa.
Más adelante nos encontramos con el Anfiteatro de Guanabacoa un espacio cultural al aire libre ubicado a unos pasos del centro del municipio, diseñado para acoger espectáculos musicales, teatrales y comunitarios. Aunque no es tan conocido como otros escenarios habaneros, ha sido un punto de encuentro clave para la vida artística y popular de la localidad.
Pasé por los Escolapios, el sitio donde se estableció la primera presencia escolapia en América, con un colegio emblemático que dejó una profunda huella educativa, cultural y espiritual en la comunidad. Aunque hoy ya no funciona como centro docente, años atrás, cuando mi hijo cursaba la secundaria, su escuela estaba ubicada en este lugar tan significativo, recordado como un semillero de ciudadanos ilustres. Su legado sigue vivo en la memoria de Guanabacoa.
I have a very special affection for this city. I lived here for almost twenty years, and every so often I return to this place that brightened my days for so many years. My son grew up here, I experienced many cherished moments here, and I have friends here who are like family: affections that don't fade with time, but rather grow stronger.
On my last visit, I was surprised by the changes. Upon arriving in the city center, where Martí Park is located, I noticed a remarkable transformation. Buses no longer run through that area, and everything feels calmer, cleaner, and more open. I remember when spending half an hour there was a challenge because of the constant noise. Today, however, it's a serene, almost silent plaza… perhaps too silent. In its center stands a white marble bust on a tall pedestal, in honor of General Adolfo del Castillo.
Siento un cariño muy especial por esta ciudad. Viví en ella casi veinte años, y cada cierto tiempo regreso a este lugar que durante tantos años alegró mis días. Aquí creció mi hijo, aquí viví momentos entrañables, y aquí tengo amigos que son como familia: afectos que no se disuelven con el tiempo, sino que se fortalecen.
En mi última visita, me sorprendieron los cambios. Al llegar al centro de la ciudad, donde se encuentra el Parque Martí, noté una transformación notable. Ya no transitan ómnibus por esa zona, y todo se siente más tranquilo, limpio y despejado. Recuerdo cuando pasar media hora allí era un reto por el bullicio constante. Hoy, en cambio, es una plaza serena, casi silenciosa… quizás demasiado. En su centro se alza un busto de mármol blanco sobre un alto pedestal, en honor al General Adolfo del Castillo.
That day, despite the park's tranquility, several families were enjoying the shade of the trees, children were running around, and grandparents were chatting. I was touched to see that, despite the changes, the heart of Guanabacoa remains a gathering place, albeit much quieter.
Walking along its cobblestone streets is like walking through centuries of history. Around the park stand buildings that have witnessed the lives of its inhabitants: El Capricho store, where you can always find a little bit of everything; the old telephone company; and, across Pepe Antonio Street, the building that now houses the Municipal Assembly of People's Power. This colonial-style building is part of the historic center's heritage complex, declared an area of high cultural value for its architecture and symbolism.
Ese día, a pesar de la tranquilidad en el parque habían varias familias disfrutando de la sombra de los árboles, niños corriendo, abuelos conversando. Me conmovió ver que, a pesar de los cambios, el corazón de Guanabacoa sigue siendo un centro de concurrencia aunque mucho más calmo.
Caminar por sus calles adoquinadas es recorrer siglos de historia. En los alrededores del parque se alzan edificaciones que han sido testigos de la vida de sus habitantes; la tienda El Capricho, donde siempre hay de todo un poco; la antigua compañía de teléfonos; y, cruzando la calle Pepe Antonio, el edificio que hoy alberga la Asamblea Municipal del Poder Popular. Esta construcción, de estilo colonial, forma parte del conjunto patrimonial del centro histórico, declarado zona de alto valor cultural por su arquitectura y simbolismo.
