Hi all 👋🏻
Today I want to share with you my Walk through the city of Mdina in Malta. The Maltese name of it is L-Imdina.
It used to be the old capital of the island of Malta.
Nowadays Valletta is the capital.
This walk is rather unique, when you know a little about Malta and Mdina, you know there are always tons and tons of tourists… so you will have to explore the city with many other people.
Malta is very overpopulated and has a very high population density as it is rather a small Island in the Mediterranean Sea.
But back to Mdina: as we lived a year on the island of Malta in 2019-2020 during lockdowns and the start of the pandemic… (we were relocated by work)
We could explore this city almost ALONE.
There was nobody around. 😳
We lived the first few months in Birgu and the rest of the year in Rabat.
Rabat is located next to Mdina. So we walked one day to it… on the 5th of June 2020 to be precise and were surprised to find almost nobody around. We had the entire CITY for us alone.
What makes my photographs rather unique 😁😇

“The city was founded around the 8th century BC by Phoenician settlers, and was later renamed Melite by the Romans. Ancient Melite was larger than present-day Mdina, and it was reduced to its present size during the Byzantine or Arab occupation of Malta.”
”The Nickname of the city is The Silent City, because no cars are allowed in other then a few from the residents.”
The city is full of baroque architecture what is a pretty sight and I show you in my photographs today.

It is the small area surrounded by city walls. Everything bottom left of it is Rabat.

You see the city walls go all the way around it.
Let’s start our walk, Enjoy ☺️
As we walked from Rabat to Mdina we see the city walls first.
They are huge…
We walk towards the main Gate of the city of Mdina to enter.
(See how empty it is… photographs from this gate are normally full with other people.)
To the left we see…
The city gate. It’s very beautiful to see all the architectural features up close.
Let’s walk through it.
Just behind it, when you look right, you see this.
The Mdina dungeons.
Note: everything is closed when we walked around the city…
A pretty house turned into a Mdina glass shop next to a souvenir shop, also closed.
We see details all around us. Old street lights.
Cute doorways.
And alleyways.
Details when we look up… layers behind each other.
The façades of the buildings, their architecture is just stunning… look at all the intricate details.
Cathedral Museum. Look at the statues holding up the balcony.
Small medieval alleyways guiding you all around the city. There are a few routes you can walk but you can easily see it all in an hour…
Let’s go down there…. 😉 and see what is behind that corner.
We pass by these window gates.
Some beautiful doors along our walk.

This door knocker is rather unique. In Malta you find the most beautiful and intricate door knockers.
I made it a habit of photographing them. I show you a few in this post 😎
The most photographed house in Mdina as it is perfect for social media… 🤩 people say.
Yes, it is pretty… 🥰 especially when the bright purple flowers bloom even more.
Another unique door knocker… they are dragons.
We reach a little square and see this house. Painted in white. It stands out as most are yellow from the sand stone.
I love the symmetry of it.
We see a few residential cars in this square, but still nobody is around.
More beautiful doors.
Another amazing door knocker we found in the city.
How cool would it be to have one of these on your door… 🤩
If you look up once in a while you see above you windows with so many details…
Statues on corners.
Little door handle on a gate. How cute…
More empty streets.
An old door… what would be behind it?
It says it is a palace… probably with a beautiful inner courtyard or even an garden. Most are privately owned.
Intriguing… I could fantasise about it all day. 😎
We walk past another great door knocker.
Hhhmmm hidden away was this corner with stairs… looks like it isn’t well maintained. I didn’t explore further… sadly… lol
Another gate through the city walls. This one allows cars to drive through. I think it was the only one if I’m not mistaken.
I liked this building the most in the city of Mdina, it has an Neo-gothic architecture. It is rather unique in its style as most other architecture in Malta is baroque.
It has also many gargoyles… do you see them?

So cool… I like gargoyles and have a few as statues in our home. 🖤
The city walls have a few look out points… if you climb up the stairs you have this view over the island of Malta.
Looking towards Sliema.
Looking towards Gozo. But the hill of Rabat is in the way.
As we walk back towards the city’s main gate…
We have this view.
This large museum on the left is also closed. It has a beautiful courtyard… but we can’t see.
We left the city and walked back home to Rabat.

But I wanted to show you a few photographs from looking towards the walled city of Mdina in the distance.
As you can see it is located high up on top of a hill. Overlooking most of the island of Malta.
Here you see also how large the city walls are.
This is a view of the City Gates when tourists are around… hahaha what a difference, don’t you think?
