One of the attractions close to our rental cottage in Maine was the Coastal Maine Botanical Garden, so we of course had to go. Spanning 295 acres, it is considered New England's largest botanical garden. With a five-year-old, it was difficult to see the whole garden, but we saw three out of five large wooden trolls by the Danish artist Thomas Dambo; each one needing a few reminders that it was not a playground. The trolls are known as the Guardian of the Seeds and their recycled-wood construct represents sustainability efforts of Maine. Thomas Dambo's is a leading recycled materials artist and his giant trolls can be found in wooded areas throughout the world. It is really unique that he names all of them and gives them each a personality and sustainability value to represent. We saw Roskva, Søren, and Birk on our walk. I have included photos of two of the trolls below.
From the Coastal Maine Botanical Garden website:
"Roskva is the heaviest, hardest, and strongest of the trolls. Every day, Roskva climbs towards the sky, and every year she grows taller and wider. If a troll forgets something, they can always ask Roskva—she counts the seasons and remembers everything that happens around her."
From the Coastal Maine Botanical Garden website:
Birk is the wisest and most mysterious of the trolls. He hides in the shadows and listens to the whispers of the soil. He knows everything that happens in the wild, and every day he tells tales to all the other creatures of the forest.
