It's been ages ago since I have posted about my Wednesday Walks. Today, I had pretty long walk and I would like to join the challenge created by . This is a walk round my hometown on a very hot day. Mind you, the summer started earlier and we have heat wave that makes me wonder what we could expect next two months. But enough about the weather.
So, come and see through my lens where I have been today.
Welcome to Varna!
The sign says Varna in Cyrillic alphabet. Next to the left - 100 years the town being tourist destination. What ou can see behind is the Cathedral with its shiny domes. Recently they were cleaned from the patina which was given greenish colour and painted with golden colour. Also the facade was cleaned and now the Cathedral looks like brand new.
The Cathedral is situated in the center of the town and from where I took the photos starts the pedestrian street. Here is the Opera house - in red in white.
And next to it - the fountain.
Our next stop is the ruins of the Roman Thermae (Thermal baths). Once the town was Roman named Odessos. What was left from that magnificent building now us just ruins. However, it was once a place where the citizens were not just having bath, but it was a meeting point to discuss politics, gosip or even gamble. The picture below is showing a reconstruction of how it has looked like.
Now the ruins are surrounded by residentual buildings. The grass grows where once the lavish mosaics were covering the floor.
The Romans were remarkable builders and to show you how advanced they were, have a look at the next picture, giving us a glimpse of how this huge building was heated.
The system, called Hypocaust is basically leaving hollow space under the floor as well as in the walls, where through pipes hot air was moving and thus heating the premises.
And that was my Wednesday Walk, or better to say, part of my walk as I kept going all morning and early afternoon. Hope you all have lovely day!
Thank you for viewing.
