About a week ago my SIL and her husband visited us from San Francisco. They had planned a week of vacation in NYC and stayed with us for Sunday night and Monday before venturing into the city.
Since we hadn't seen them personally in quite a few years we didn't want to do too much but rather talk. On the other hand, we also didn't want to just sit around the house, so we planned another little day trip. At least that was the intent but it was a bit cursed because:
Everything is closed on Mondays!
Museums, sites of interest, you name it - most of them are only open on the weekends and most definitely not on Mondays. So, what to do? Go anyhow! And just walk around a small NJ town for a bit.
After having had a late breakfast with homemade sourdough bread, of course, we had a brief walk around our neighborhood and then packed their bags into our car, and off we went to
The Red Mill, Clinton, NJ
This is a restored water mill that was turned into an indoor/outdoor museum. It's a really great place with different buildings and you can walk around the grounds and see a lot of neat stuff on display. We were quite bummed that it was closed. I mean I can understand it because this is pretty much country and tourists usually only come here on weekends. So why open shop during the other days? Makes sense, right?
But Clinton itself is a cute little small town that's worth a brief visit, too. You may walk up and down the streets and just enjoy. There's also a beautiful old church and graveyard. Luckily the weather was perfect. Of course, we had to check out a local cafe to have a tiny lunch which hit the spot after all the walking.
I didn't take too many photos because, hmm, I guess I just wasn't in the mood - LOL - I wasn't the tourist this time. Okay, okay, my excuse is that I have been there before and took a gazillion photos. Some of which I probably should have added to this post to show you the museum village.
In any case, we all enjoyed the little excursion very much, especially our fam since the architecture is quite different from San Francisco.
Take this bridge, the Lowthorp Truss Bridge which is apparently quite remarkable due to its age but also because it is made of cast and wrought iron. You can read up on it here - I don't really know this stuff 😅.
And for good measure here are a couple more pictures of the Red Mill from across said bridge. After the afternoon walk we drove our fam to Hoboken where we had a very yummy and enjoyable (and really expensive! Still amazed at how much more it was compared to just a few years ago...) dinner on the waterfront overlooking NYC before they hopped into an Uber and across the Hudson to the city and we drove home.
It was time and money well spent. We all had a great time and enjoyed the day together.
