You have probably noticed that I didn't publish too many posts lately and as a matter of fact, I think that I made the longest "break" between two posts ever! It was exactly 1 week between my two PH-Pool posts, and I know that I didn't skip any of the #MyHiveGoals posts... But, I have a good excuse this time! For a long time, I had a vacation where I didn't hang on my computer...
I will try to create another series of posts from my latest road trip, as I have used my phone camera heavily... lol... My trip began on January 1st (is there a better way to start the New Year?) and finished on January 8th... It was a kind of round-trip (literally round) through Portugal and Southern Spain...
On our route, we (I went with my family) had multiple cities where some of them weren't even in "calculations" before the trip... In the end, we visited Almería, Malaga, Tarifa, Huelva, Lisbon, Porto, and Salamanca! As I like to do things in order, I will share these posts as they were happening... So, our first stop is Almería!
Before the start, I would say that the timing of this trip was perfect... As it was right after the New Year, almost all the cities that we visited were still decorated with lights and the streets were busy... Outdoor markets, entertainment parks, and other different events all around...
Why Almería? To be honest, I picked that city as it was at the ideal distance between our homeplace and the next "stage"... We couldn't go early in the morning on the trip, so I have limited "driving" time for the first day... But, Almería wasn't a disappointing choice at all!
The city itself is popular for many different things, but there are 2 main things that "stand out"... It is one of the main sources of fruits and vegetables in Spain, which wouldn't be a surprise if you look at the number of sunny days during the year... But, if you take a look at Google maps, you will notice that the whole area is colored red, which means that there is a lack of water...
... and that leads to the second "attraction" to this area... As it looks like a desert, it has been used as a land for recording dozens (or better said hundreds) of movies! For huge filmmaking companies, it is cheaper to record movies in Spain than to "re-create" and rent Hollywood studios... So, here were filmed all-time classics such as Lawrence of Arabia (1962) or A Fistful of Dollars (1964), but also newer movies like Terminator: Dark Fate or Game of Thrones (2016 season 6)...
But, as I said, we didn't have time to visit those locations (there are guided tours if you are interested), but we had a nice long shot to the city center and walked through the streets from our hotel and back...
These nice Christmas decorations were situated on the main square around the city town building...
This was another city square, but this time, it was in front of the old cathedral... As it has been so nicely decorated, many people were taking photos, including myself... 😃 As it was late in the evening, Cathedral was closed, so we couldn't get in to take more photos...
...but, we did get closer to take a look at the statue of the Almerian bishop, and also, to buy tasty chestnuts from the local girl that was selling them... 🍽
Interestingly, every street in the city had different decorations...
...and then we bumped into something that I have never seen... Such a great idea how to create a "dreamy" environment using simple tools like ordinary lights, laser lights, a bit of "disco smoke", and a good sound system... All that, used in a perfect location... The local park that has these trees with long branches...
What you can see in the photos was followed by the child's narration of a story about the sea and the creatures living in it...
Another huge city avenue is a perfect place for a big noria that was built 2 years ago and I suppose that these lights were added as a Christmas decoration... If you want to check out the views from it, you can visit this post...
Another perfect place for taking photos with your family or friends was this "Christmas bell", which was right behind that teddy bear from the beginning of this post...
As tradition says, when it's Christmas time, you have to have a Christmas market! It's not like those German markets, but you can find many interesting things that you can use, or keep as a memory of this great city...
Of course, a lot of candies for the children, pancakes, hot beverages, etc...
Thank you for your valuable time,
ph
