I was pleasantly surprised by a package from my sorority sister who was visiting New York City.
She sent me Orwashers bagels, and the second I opened the box, it took me right back to the trips we used to take together. Nothing fancy, nothing planned down to the minute — just us, wandering around the city, eating whatever looked good, and feeling like we were getting away with something.
We were always half‑lost, half‑confident, and fully convinced we were grown. We’d grab bagels at random hours because that’s what you do in New York, and because we didn’t care about sleep or schedules. We’d sit on a bench, or a curb, or wherever we landed, and eat like we hadn’t just eaten two hours earlier. Those moments weren’t dramatic or deep. They were just easy. Comfortable. The kind of memories that stick without trying.
What I remember most isn’t the skyline or the museums or the photos we took. It’s the feeling of being surrounded by people who understood me without explanation. The inside jokes. The way we talked over each other. The way we moved as a pack even when we had no idea where we were going. It was simple, and it was good.
So when I saw those bagels in the box, it hit me in a quiet way. My sister didn’t need to send anything. She could’ve just texted me a picture or told me about her trip later. But she thought of me in the middle of her own plans and decided to share a piece of it. That kind of gesture says a lot without making a big deal out of it.
Sisterhood looks different now. We’re not living in the same house or running into each other in the hallway. We’re spread out, busy, dealing with real life instead of class schedules. Our connection didn’t fade. It just shifted. It shows up in small things — a random package, a quick message, a memory that pops up out of nowhere and makes you smile.
I toasted one of the bagels and ate it standing at my kitchen counter. Nothing special. But it made me feel grounded. It reminded me that these friendships didn’t disappear just because life got bigger. They’re still here, steady in the background, showing up exactly when they need to.
That’s something I’m grateful for. A box of bagels turned into a reminder of who we were, who we still are, and how lucky I am to have people who stay connected in their own simple, thoughtful ways.
