Greetings friends, today I decided to take another factory walk... or rather, a walk through a former factory. I would absolutely love to walk through a working factory as well, but that's hard to accomplish. Sometimes you can get into a working factory together with a tour, or on the occasion of some holiday, but such opportunities are rare. So if I want to walk among the monuments of industrial architecture, I have to choose one of the factories that are no longer in operation.
I went for a walk around the grounds of Ivan Goth's rope factory. This factory was founded in 1790s. It produced ropes, lines, cords and other gear for various uses. Part of the factory's production was supplied abroad: to European countries, to China, to America.
Originally the buildings of the factory were wooden. But at the end of the XIX century they were replaced by red brick factory buildings equipped with the latest technology. Not far away, on the bank of the Neva River, were erected residential brick houses for factory workers. A mansion for the factory owner was also erected, surrounded by a vast garden.
Until recently, the territory of the factory was surrounded by a blind fence and it was impossible to get in. From behind the fence you could only see the fire tower. Rope production was a very fire hazardous industry and such a tower was vital before the era of universal telephonization.
A few years ago, the area occupied by the old factory was designated for new residential construction. After expert examination, some of the buildings of the old factory received the status of industrial architectural monuments. Residential buildings are already being erected on the adjacent site, but the re-equipment of the old buildings requires a more complex project.
One of the buildings of the factory has been renovated and houses a theater. Some other premises are temporarily occupied by small tenants. Some of the buildings still have old production equipment, which is also of historical value. The reconstruction projects of the factory have not been published yet, and how this area will look like in the future remains to be guessed. But for now it is still easy to imagine the recent past - just walk along the narrow streets between these old smoky walls.
