We did a trekking in the Vouraikos gorge in Peloponnese lately. This is a very nice hike, as the scenery is magnificent, nonetheless as it takes place literally on the train rails, the ballast that is all over the narrow path makes it difficult to hike for more than 3.5 hours.
Most people (us too) take the small train from Diakofto village terminal up to Zachlorou village terminal and take the hike back to Diakofto. The train connects Diakofto and historical Kalavryta village.
The travel to Zachlorou lasts for about 30min and you must foresee and buy the tickets in advance.
So, we started our trek from Zachlorou train stop. For me it lasted about 4 hours with normal pace. But one must bear in mind that there are difficult narrow bridges standing on cliffs, and the path is not easy going.
Other than that, the scenery is one of a kind. The river, Vouraikos, running in the gorge is vivid and irrigates the area’s crops. The flora is alive and in full color at the beginning of fall.
Some advice on my end: Wear good hiking shoes. Get some food and water along with you as there is no supply throughout the hike. Visit during spring or fall. If you want to use one of the train’s itineraries (either aller or retour) plan well, as there are only 3 courses throughout the day. Don’t take this hike if you are afraid of heights as sometimes you walk by the cliffs. Don’t take this hike if you are not partially experienced as the path with the shingles is intimidating.
The entire gorge length is of 22klm. If you like this sort of vacation, just do it! It is amazing!
