From an art standpoint, it is also the "Busy Season." It's the time to be cranking out lots of new work in preparation for holiday shows... right? Well, for some of us, it is.
Unfortunately, my brain has been feeling like Jello as of late, and creativity has been at rock bottom for a while... in part thanks to recent bout of the flu. Illness truly kills my creative flow!
So, What Can You DO?
Well, the fine old practice of simply "waiting it out" and hoping that I will feel more creative tomorrow hasn't exactly been doing the job!
We have a two-day show coming up the weekend after next, and it also happens to be one of the biggest events of our year!
Since actual creativity hasn't exactly been in "my corner" for a while, I have instead taken to organizing all the ready to go items we do have, and determining where the more glaring "holes" in the stock are. I may not have produced anything, but at least I now know where I need to apply my creativity, when it does start working again.
Creativity "Under the Gun"
People sometimes ask me just how much creativity is actually needed to paint patterns on rocks... patterns that — to the untrained eye — look pretty much the same.
"Can't you just sit down and mechanically go through the motions?"
I wish I could! Actually... I have tried, and not very successfully.
For one thing, I tend to work at an absolute snail's pace, when I am not in the right frame of mind. The other problem is that I tend to make a lot of mistakes when my heart really isn't in it. And that ultimately leads to a lot of wasted time and effort.
The good news is that I am actually fairly good at "creativity under the gun."
Which means I typically end up surprising myself by just how much work I can churn out in a matter of a couple of days, when I really get into the right mind-body-spirit space.
Tomorrow marks the start of a new month, so I just hope that maybe something shakes loose... because the clock is ticking... tick-tock!

Because I am trying to make some semblance of income — a part time living, even — I now add this footer to all my posts, in the hope that someone, somewhere, might decide to take a further look at my work, and perhaps consider supporting independent art.
