I tell you that thanks to your support in my previous posts and works of illustration and photography I have been able to gather some of the proceeds to acquire new artistic materials and thus improve my quality of illustration.
A few days ago I was finally able to buy new brushes, since the ones I have, have quite deteriorated bristles, so I wanted some new brushes of soft bristles, to paint with watercolors.
Les cuento que gracias a su apoyo en mis anteriores post y trabajos de ilustración y fotografía he podido reunir parte del ingreso para adquirir nuevos materiales de arte y mejorar así mi calidad de ilustración.
Hace unos días por fin pude comprar nuevos pinceles, ya hacia un buen tiempo que no tenía pinceles nuevos, porque los que tengo ya tiene las cerdas bastante deterioradas, por lo que quería unos nuevos de cerdas suave para pintar con acuarelas.
Today I want to show you this illustration that I made from a myth of my city.
Hoy quiero mostrarles esta ilustración que hice a partir de un mito de mi ciudad.
I live in San Felipe, Yaracuy state in Venezuela. A state well known nationally for being a place full of myths and legends, a place of quite peculiar energies. Since there are many people in my state who practice witchcraft, there are two aspects to it, the witchcraft of white magic and the witchcraft of black magic.
Yo vivo en San Felipe, estado Yaracuy en Venezuela. Un estado muy conocido a nivel nacional por ser un lugar lleno de mitos y leyendas, un lugar de vibras y energías bastante peculiares. Ya que hay una gran cantidad de personas de mi estado que practican la brujería, habiendo dos vertientes en ella, la brujería de magia blanca y la de magia negra.
But well, I can't talk so much about an issue I don't know. I also wanted to talk to you about this as a curious fact about where I live.
Pero bueno, no puedo hablar tanto sobre un tema que desconozco. Aún así quería hablarles de esto como un hecho curioso sobre el lugar dónde vivo.
The main theme of this post is the illustration I made about one of these myths and I dare say that the most important, Maria Lionza.
El tema principal de este post es la ilustración que hice sobre uno de estos mitos y me atrevo a decir que el mas importante, María Lionza.
A little bit of Maria Lionza's story
Un poco de la historia de María Lionza
She is known by several names, María de la Onza, Yara, or Guaichía. And it is a deity that is part of not only the culture of my state but of all Venezuela. His cult dates back long before the arrival of the Spaniards in Venezuelan territory.
The present Yaracuy State was a place previously inhabited by indigenous people, it is said that they were of the most warrior tribes in the whole country, they venerated Yara, the Goddess of nature and love. As a curious fact, some linguists point out that the word "Yaracauy" has as meaning "place of Yara".
According to Yara's indigenous description, this was a sad woman with big green eyes, long lashes and wide hips. He smelled orchids, his smile was sweet and melancholy, his hair straight and long to the waist, with three beautiful flowers open behind his ears.
According to legend, Yara, who was a beautiful indigenous princess, was kidnapped by a huge snake that owns the lagoons and rivers of the area, as she fell in love with her. Knowing the mountainous spirits what the snake did, they decided to punish it by causing it to swell until it exploded and died.
Afterwards, they chose Yara as the owner of the lagoons, rivers and waterfalls, appointing her mother and protector of nature, the queen of love. The myth of Yara even survived the Spanish conquest, although its history underwent some modifications. Yara was then covered by the Catholic religion with the mantle of the Christian virgin and took the name of Our Lady Mary of the Ounce of the Prado de Talavera de Nivar. However, over time, she would be known as Mary of Ounce, until she reached the present Maria Lionza.
Se le conoce con varios nombres, María de la Onza, Yara, o Guaichía. Y es una deidad que forma parte no solo de la cultura de mi estado si no de toda Venezuela. Su culto se remonta a mucho tiempo antes de la llegada de los españoles a territorio venezolano.
El actual Estado Yaracuy era un lugar habitado anteriormente por indígenas,se cuenta que eran de las tribus mas guerreras de todo el país, estos veneraban a Yara, la Diosa de la naturaleza y el amor. Como dato curioso algunos lingüistas señalan que el vocablo "Yaracauy" tiene como significado "lugar de Yara".
De acuerdo a la descripción que los indígenas hacían de Yara, ésta era una mujer triste de grandes ojos verdes, pestañas largas y amplias caderas. Olía a orquídeas, su sonrisa era dulce y melancólica, los cabellos lisos y largos hasta la cintura, con tres hermosas flores abiertas tras las orejas.
Según la leyenda, Yara quien era una hermosa princesa indígena, fue raptada por una enorme serpiente dueña de las lagunas y los ríos, ya que se enamoró de ella. Enterados los espíritus de la montaña de lo hecho por la serpiente, decidieron castigarla haciendo que se hinchara hasta que reventara y muriera.
Tras esto, eligieron a Yara como dueña de las lagunas, ríos y cascadas, madre protectora de la naturaleza y reina del amor. El mito de Yara sobrevivió incluso a la conquista española, aunque su historia sufrió algunas modificaciones. Yara luego fue cubierta por la religión católica con el manto de la virgen cristiana y tomó el nombre de Nuestra Señora María de la Onza del Prado de Talavera de Nivar. Sin embargo, con el paso del tiempo, sería conocida como María de la Onza, hasta llegar a la actual María Lionza.
Based on this description of María Lionza, I decided to make my illustration, I wanted to make it different, being from a different angle a little more faithful to the details of which is spoken in this version of the story, which is the best known, drawing it accompanied by her faithful lover the snake god.
This since they always show her standing, giving importance to her prominent hips, and her good body, with a fruit bowl in her hands, riding a danta, animal also mystical and of great importance in the fauna of the state, to symbolize her relationship with nature.
Basándome en esta descripción de María Lionza, decidí hacer mi ilustración, quería hacerla diferente, siendo desde un ángulo distinto un poco más fiel a los detalles de los que se habla en esta versión de la historia, la cual es la mas conocida, dibujándola acompañada de su fiel amante el dios serpiente.
Esto ya que siempre la muestran de pie, dando importancia a sus caderas prominentes, y su buen cuerpo, con un cuenco de fruta en sus manos, montando un danta, animal también místico y de gran importancia en la fauna del estado, para simbolizar su relación con la naturaleza.

- Prismacolor colors of the school line
- School Sysabe watercolors
- Watercolor paper (I don't remember the weight but it has good thickness and put up with the work quite well)

- Colores Prismacolor de la linea escolar
- Acuarelas Sysabe escolares
- Papel de acuarela (no recuerdo el gramaje pero tiene buen grosor y soportó bastante bien el trabajo)
