Daily Painting – The Yellow Capsicum (and a Massive QLD Storm)
Boring Background
I'm Blingit. An Aussie SAHM who spends my life at the ballet studio with my kids and in my spare time I paint. I’m still on “kids home sick” duty, but that never seems to stop the painting… if anything it accelerates it.
Yesterday I squeezed in the little pear painting, and today I decided to tackle a yellow capsicum. I used the same method as the pear: quick sketch, tonal block-in, and then straight into colour.
Today’s Painting – Yellow Capsicum
I figured the orange-yellow of the capsicum would absolutely go best over a sienna underpainting, so I did a loose warm wash first. It worked beautifully – all the deeper notes in the shadows feel like they are coming from underneath the paint instead of sitting on top. well until ibuggered a few things up. but it certainly helped while painting it.
Paints Used
- Background: optical black (NO tube black).
Ultramarine Blue + Burnt Umber, with the tiniest contamination of whatever was on my brush (probably a whisper of sienna). - Foreground: white, neutrals, and a tiny bit of red to warm it up.
- Capsicum: Cad Yellow Medium + a touch of red, some Umber in the shadow planes, and the sienna underpainting shining through.
- Glazes: transparent yellow + medium, and a thin scrub of desaturated purples/browns in the deeper shadows.
- Shadow colour: honestly… I can’t remember exactly. It looks like a grey, but it isn’t black-grey.
Most likely Blue + Magenta + something neutral.
The Process
It came together FAST – probably around an hour or so. I did have to go back and fix one tiny thing: somehow on the right-hand side I hadn’t filled the curve properly and it looked weirdly angular. I corrected maybe 2mm… and somehow that made a massive difference to the whole shape. (Why are capsicums shaped like melted geometry? 😅)
While all this was happening, Queensland decided to put on one of those WHOPPING summer storms. The lights were flickering, I thought we were about to lose power mid-brushstroke, but we survived. The storm actually made the whole session feel super dramatic. Highly recommend storm painting 10/10. As you know i have done quite a bit of storm painting this week.
as you might be able to tell in one of these photos the right side got a bit angular somewhere in painting... thats what i fixed.
🩰 Dance Mum Moment – Exam Results!
Small personal brag because I was buzzing tonight.
The kids got their exam results back and I was worried about my big girl. She’s gorgeous, but the upper grades get very strict and I didn’t want her walking into presentation night with zero trophies while her little ballsy sister walked away with a full set.
But I should have trusted her.
Big girl
- Honours Plus in Tap
- Honours in Ballet
- Honours in Jazz
Little one (as expected, she is on FIRE)
- Honours Plus for Ballet
- Honours Plus for Tap
- Honours Plus for Jazz
So yes, both girls are very happy and so am I!
The little turd, she cam out of her exam with the most cocky face ever and said... "well that was an honours plus" and i had to whollop her to shut her up... omg.... she is just so naughty!!
What’s Next
Tomorrow I’m doing the capsicum again, but with a totally different look and feel.
I’m thinking lavender background… but we’ll see where the brush takes me. I have dance school runs all day, we have the concert coming up and a singing showcase and all sorts. that needs lots of rehershals
See you tomorrow!
