Daily Painting: Nail Polish Bottle – A Rough One Today
Hi everyone!
Well… what a day. The studio disco is today, and I’m absolutely flat out.
Like usual, the menu changed last minute, and now I have to provide something more substantial.
We don’t even have a proper kitchen at the studio, so everything’s being hauled in from home — it’s chaos, honestly.
So yes… today’s painting is a little more rough around the edges.
I wish I had time to fix a few bits, but this whole challenge is about capturing what I can in under an hour and letting the imperfections stand.
Eventually I might go back and tweak it — but not today!
🎨 About the Painting
Today’s subject is a small nail polish bottle on a canvas panel.
Because I didn’t sketch it particularly well first, it ended up sitting a bit too high on the canvas — one of those little composition quirks that I’d normally fix digitally if I could just grab and shift it down a centimetre or so!
But that’s the beauty of painting traditionally, isn’t it?
Once it’s there, it’s there.
you can't see it here, but you will when you scroll down to the "in progress shots " below
🖌️ Colours Used
Background: Ultramarine + Crimson + White, with a touch of brown to knock it back in parts. It really needs another coat, but I left it as-is to keep that spontaneous feel.
Bottle: Mainly yellows and white, with a dab of Burnt Sienna in the deeper parts for warmth and depth.
Surface reflections: A mix of Yellow Ochre, a hint of the background yellow, and a few faint glints from the surrounding table tones.
as you can see.... the bottle is too high, i 100% admit to cheating and when i photographed the final one i let the camera accidently miss the bottom cm of the canvas so the final looks a tad more "ballanced" that it actually is :-) sorry folks... lol
Reflections on Painting Rough
Sometimes I find it hard to post things I’m not completely happy with.
Posting feels a bit like confirming that this is my best effort, and that’s not always comfortable!
But that’s why I love the daily painting format — it forces me to do the best I can within an hour,
accept what’s done, and move on. Or in this case just 30 mins.
Each painting is a little stepping stone — and over time, I can already see that I’m getting faster and closer to what I want without so much over-fussing.
It’s progress in motion.
Just whne i dissapear from painting for a few weeks i sort of have to start back a bit... ah well... i love creating thats what matters right.
Anyway, that’s it for today’s quick one — I’ll be back tomorrow, hopefully with tales from the dance disco (though that one might go over in GEMS rather than here in OCA).
Thanks for reading, and happy painting everyone!
