Process:
I have seen a photograph a while on the internet and could not for the sake of me find out if it was real or not, but they were these MASSIVE swords statues in the mountains, in a Scandinavian country. I thought to myself "This is EPIC" and kind of went on with my life.
Last night, I had a really fantastic dream taking place in a Norse mythology scenery. So of course I woke up and ran straight to my computer to find more pics of these epic swords, and started modeling them.
The mountain underneath the swords is a mix of different brushes I've accumulated throughout my 3D journey, some manual sculpting, and layers of displacements/bumps with various textures combined.
The swords are somehow quite basic shapes since they are just huge statues, but the stone material in itself is fully procedural and unique for each sword. I used an important number of noise textures, some voronoi and musgrave, layers and layers of colour ramps to achieve the right denting in the stone.
The volume was half achieve through volume simulation in Blender, some image planes with alpha channel in Blender, and then some manual painting in Inkscape, before importing all of that in GIMP for the final composition
It was a super fun project to work on!
