I wanted to show you my First Pastel Drawing of a Lion and some step by steps of it. (SBS) Also my first Lion 🦁
Title: ”Dreaming”
It is a study, more like an exercise for me and in my private collection. It holds a special meaning to me…
I finished this drawing 10-2011 and is one of my earlier Artworks. I started my art in 2011.
~The Dimensions are 57,5 x 41,7 cm / 22.6 x 16.4 inch
~Underground is a velours pastel paper, almost a fabric so you feel the texture. (Think of the old dark red, thick velours curtains… it is like that. Just glued onto paper)
~Pastels I am using are from Talens Rembrandt

Before I started working;
I taped the velours paper to a large drawing board, vertically (my old architecture drawing board) so I can work either standing or sitting down.
I placed a strip of tape underneath it in the long way, but only taped the bottom half to the board. I folded the top part back so it sticks out underneath the long way of the paper. It will catch the pastel dust that falls down when I am drawing.
(I do not have a photo from this setting, but when I start another pastel drawing I will show it to you)
Step 1
Here I am testing out the velours paper. Drawing in the main features of the Lion. Blacking in the background. Getting a feel for the paper and pastel sticks while doing it.
Step 2
I finished here my under layers.
Step 3
Here I started to add details on the left side. Building up the hair.
Step 3 detail
Here you can see I build up the hairs with lots of colours and lines.
Step 4
I added more details on the left side. The body takes shape.
Step 5
More work is done on the left side.
Step 6
Here I worked on the hairs on his head and his ear. Next I will work the hairs all in and then go over them to make little adjustments.
Step 7
More details added.
Step 8
Right side is getting more details, I started around his eyes and nose.
Progress after 15 hours drawing during several days with breaks in between.

More details added to his face. Building it up.

Still working on his face. I finished his eyes 😉😎

Framed
While I was drawing this pastel artwork (September and October 2011) and the next 2 years after… I changed my entire life… made decisions to change my future. Took a step towards freedom. 🥰 It felt like I was drawing all that in this drawing, my emotions, feelings, desires and dreams. See where the title came from 😉
That is why it holds a special place in my heart.
