Greetings, friends!
This is a snapshot of my latest work on the illustrations for the Western Shores board game project. The game is about Viking explorers braving the unknown in search of legendary lands west across the ocean.
This piece is of a colony on the south coast of Greenland. The layout is completely fictional. And it might look a little bit too green for Greenland. Let's say it must have been a happy little warm summer out there.
Yesterday, I published my first attempt at the topic and I told you why I felt I had to scrap it. Of course, there were good things there as well, things that I would have liked to be able to bring over to this piece but that is not possible for me. Not yet. I am learning as I go.
The very beginnings of this piece can be seen in my previous post under the snapshot of the previous attempt. Some of the rest of the stages are here:
I was determined to get the scale of the huts correct this time or at least considerably more so than last time. This is why I started with happy little lines of Raw Sienna.
One by one, a dozen and some more houses are built.
Then they gain some platforms, and bushes, and rocks beneath them.
Next changes go undocumented until the result in the top image was achieved. Which includes some scarce infrastructure (hints of stairs, yay!, and a single pier), a ship, a couple of boats hidden in plain sight, as well as well camouflaged icebergs.
I feel as if I am throwing myself in the deep before I can swim sometimes. I can't say it's perfect but I shall not scrap it yet. Maybe I will learn a lot in the meantime and I will be able to paint better versions before is done with her 90 % of the work ;)
But who knows...this might do.
I feel better with it than without it.
After all, it was a good experience.
Crowdfunding the project — Current State Info
The account will be set as a beneficiary to receive 50% of the payouts.
The first goal is to fund the illustration process. There will be about 70 unique artworks. Of those, about 24 are now done. The remainder will take about five or six more months of work. We currently aim at USD 7500 for this stage.
Lead illustrator is and I am joining the fight from time to time, being an amateur. The total count seems too high for her to do alone under the circumstances.
Once again, any support counts. Including your feedback!
Options for supporting the project by buying limited edition digital art will soon be available.
Thank you for being with us!
Yours,
Manol
