I made this little painting as a tribute to the summer solstice this year. The sun is often represented by a spiral in ancient rock art of the southwest. I did not say "primitive", because the people who drew the sun this way were far from primitive. I highly recommend the documentary "the Mystery of Chaco Canyon," if you are curios. I hope you are.
The sun is something life giving and cheerful. It was eerily beautiful on this day when a strips of clouds passed in front of it. Just previous to getting this photograph it was peeking just between the two slits, looking like an eye of a dragon.
We took this picture on an evening walk in our prairie land. The past year and a half has been so grim and saturated with terror that it is nice to turn the news off and spend time outside.
Warm evening light shining through a healthy young tree.
We have seen the sun turn red on many evenings. The sun appears red due to a thickening of atmosphere, either by humidity or smoke. In this case, both. As the green, blue, and yellow waves of light are scattered by the atmosphere, red is all there is left to see. I love the sun this way.
Here is an underpainting for a red sun, and some rocks we collected at the beach. Nature is beautiful.
I hope you have time to watch "the Mystery of Chaco Canyon."
