Good afternoon and happy weekend, Hive friends! There have been a lot of things that happened yesterday and it quite stressed me. But for this post, I will focus on the good news. The good news yesterday was the birthday celebration of Ryota Kohama.
Ryota Kohama (born in September 4, 1989) is the bassist of rock the band, ONE OK ROCK. He has married the sister of Canadian singer, Avril Lavigne, a few years ago and now has a daughter. Last June, I've already made a drawing of Tomoya, ONE OK ROCK's drummer, smashing his face on his cake by himself. I wanted to create something different for Ryota's birthday while still getting his face shove into his birthday cake, so I thought of getting his daughter participate on my short comic for Ryota's 31st birthday.
HAPPY BIRTHDAY, RYOTA!
Note: Please read the comics from left to right, top to bottom. Just like the Japanese manga (comics).

If you are confused with the story, it is just his daughter climbing his father and accidentally pushing him into the cake while her father was preparing to smash his face into the cake in front of a video chat with the band members. The band has a cake smashing tradition during birthdays where the birthday celebrant's face is plunged into the cake by the other band members. However, pandemic happened and social distancing became a strict rule and so the cake smashing tradition was put on hold. But you know, when you have a crazy imagination and is fond of drawing, you can make anything happen. 😂
FULL SIZE VERSION
- "ARIGATO GOZAIMASU" means "Thank you".
- Ryota asks Taka, Toru, and Tomoya if he should do it.
- Not being a spoilsport, he agrees to entertain his friends.
- "GANBATTE" means "Good luck" or "Do your best".
- Preparing to smash his face while his daughter peered gets surprised because his father removed the candles and other decors.
- She leaned forward to much and pushed his father into the cake accidentally. His friends on the phone can't stop laughing at the hilarious sight.
- His daughter runs away calling her mother while his friends on the phone greet him.
- "OMEDETOU" means "Congratulations".
- The Japanese characters near his daughter's feet translates to "Ta Ta Ta..." which according to the Assets on Clip Studio Paint means something like running lightly.
Ryota started his career at a young age with the group HEADS as a singer and hip hop dancer together with Toru. When HEADS disbanded, Toru asked Ryota to join the band he is forming (ONE OK ROCK) and so Ryota have to learn how to play the bass in just two weeks (if I remember it right). There was an interview where Ryota said he decided to join the band because he wanted to be with Toru. What a friend! Ryota is the youngest member of the band.
Here is a tiny Ryota doing some hip hop dance. I wish tiny Ryota stayed forever, his voice is so tiny like a cat. 😂
And now here he is..
DRAFT
- Just in case you wanted to see my draft sketches for this comics. On the 4th page, I was supposed to draw them trying to blow the candles, but I remembered the candles must be removed from the cake for the cake smashing so I just drew them hovering their faces into the cake.
Medium: Digital (Wacom Intuos Comic)
Program: Clip Studio Paint
Time: Approximately 7 Hours
Yesterday, the band members posted photos and videos on Instagram showing that they have met and celebrated Ryota's birthday. Ryota actually did the cake smashing by himself. Lol!

Photo of all the members enjoying their first cake smashing tradition since the pandemic. They weren't able to do the cake smashing on Taka's and Tomoya's birthday last April and June.

That's all for my Ryota Birthday Comic Art post. Have you tried cake smashing? Or will you ever do it? In my case, I don't think I would do it especially with that beautiful cake. I'd rather eat it. 😂
