Hey Hive!
We're back again with another Art Attack! If you're new to the series, this is where I share my drawings and the process behind them. A behind-the-scenes look at my artwork, if you will. This is not to say that I'm very good at art, or that I'm a professional in any way. In fact this is the opposite, and serves as a reminder to how I first started, and lets me track my progress too!
Last year, I shared about some custom subscriber badges I made for my Twitch channel! After a month of streaming I was fortunate enough to become a Twitch affiliate which comes with a lot of perks like getting money through viewer subscriptions, ad revenue and the like. Subscribers get benefits such as an ad-free viewing experience but also access to unique channel emotes and a special subscriber badge next to their name in chat!
Since you get to customise the subscriber badges I thought this was a perfect chance to get creative! I wanted a consistent theme across the sub badges and I thought making it gaming-related would be appropriate. More specifically, I wanted my badges to be different classes/jobs you'd see in classic RPGs.
So for the 3.5 year sub badge I wanted to do a Paladin class since I haven't done a character with a shield yet, and Paladins are known for having a huge shield like this:
Source: firelightfables
I think swords are the most common weapons for Paladins but since I already had a Warrior character with a sword I wanted something different like a hammer.
This was the reference I used:
For the armour I didn't want something too similar to a helmet since I did that for the Warrior, so I referenced this headgear from MapleStory.
Initially I was going for this facial expression but the pose made it quite difficult to see with the hammer and shield blocking, so I had to alter it a little.
This was the sketch I ended up with.
Then I coloured in the armour without outlines since I wanted it to look shiny.
I did an outline for the shield and hammer though since I wanted it to stand out. I also added some jewels
Initially the shield was gold but once I filled in my TacoCat it blended in a little too much, so I changed it to silver as well and it actually looked a lot better. My chat agreed so we kept it at that, so in the end we get this:
For the 4 year sub badge, I wanted to go for a Jester this time since I thought it'd be more colourful. I had quite a few ideas like the pointy hat and some playing cards. Here are the references I used:
Initially I was going to draw the cat in the box like a Jack-in-the-Box because I thought it'd be cute. But then I ran out of space and couldn't fit the hat in.
I also realised I wasn't using the same base template so I decided to change it and go back to basics. I drew in the mask, the hat, some cards and the suits icons to look like they're blasting from the hands.
Then I realised the pose is quite similar to the Druid one that I did previously so I decided to change it.
I thought this looked okay at the time, so I worked on the outline.
I coloured in the hat:
And ended with some playing cards flying around with sparks. Later I also drew in some sleeves since the arms looked a little bare.
In the end we get this:
At the time I thought it looked okay, very recognisable with the playing cards and the colours. But now that I look at it again I think maybe the Jack-in-the-Box idea would've been better. Tbf I was going for a more creepy look but a Jester is supposed to be more of a troll. But I think a box would be quite unique too; which other RPG class would ever have a box?
Maybe I'll work on that for next time.
Anyway, here's a full look at the latest sub badge showcase!
