Hey Hive!
We're back again with another Art Attack! If you're new to the series, this is where I share my drawings and the process behind them. A behind-the-scenes look at my artwork, if you will. This is not to say that I'm very good at art, or that I'm a professional in any way. In fact this is the opposite, and serves as a reminder to how I first started, and lets me track my progress too!
So last week, I shared a new art piece I did by following along to another art tutorial I found on Youtube by Art with Flo:
Flo's art videos are very easy to follow and she taught my a lot of about Procreate. I like drawing along with her since she makes it so easy with step-by-step instructions and a ready-made colour palette. My drawing ended up looking really nice thanks to her help!
I was inspired to do a similar piece for my Twitch channel as an opening overlay scene, but I wanted to customise it more to fit my channel. For example, having a game controller, a Nintendo Switch, and a tablet instead of a phone. I already had a Pinterest board for a new scene that was like this until I discovered Flo's video which made things a lot easier.
First I had to get a sketch going so I knew where to place all the different items. For the controller, I wanted to make it cat-themed so it would fit my username and I found this very cute controller that actually exists.
After that I sketched out a Nintendo Switch as well.
The iPad was easy to sketch since it's just a rectangle with a border. I wanted to change the cup and the first thing I thought of was the game, Cuphead. But since it was a top-down view I wanted to change the latte art of sorts to a cat as well.
I really liked the leaves from Flo's version so I kept the leaves in but I change the position somewhat so it didn't block the Switch. I also kept the notepad and paper but I wanted to change the text written on it.
I replaced the To Do list with some of my Chat Rules and I also added in a pair of headphones. I think the angle of the headphones might be a little wonky but I wanted to show the paw print on the side as well.
After that it was time to do the line art! I followed the same colour palette initially since I liked the blue outlines Flo used.
Next it was time to colour! I colour referenced from some real life images I found online for the Switch and the headphones since they were based on real objects.
For the leaves I wanted to follow the Sunflower from the game Plants Vs Zombies, since I drew a Sunflower lamp in my subsequent scenes. I also followed the colours from Cuphead for my mug.
This was my result for the flat colours. It looked pretty good so far, but I also wanted some continuity and the purple didn't really match my items.
My actual desk in real life is brown so I figured I'd go with that instead, and added some shadows as well. I followed Flo's techniques for the leaves.
It looked alright, but still a little plain. I decided to go with the pink shadows instead and I think it actually looked better.
For the final touches, I added the lighting effects just like Flo did in her video and it turned out so good! I also added some wood grain patterns to match my irl desk better and this was the end result:
I actually really liked how this turned out! It totally fits my vibe of calm and cozy, and is a perfect start to my streams. Of course on my actual stream there is quite a lot of other stuff I have to put up for the full overlay, but this is what it typically looks like.
It's really only shown for the first few minutes of stream but it's still very pleasant to look at and I love it.
Thanks again to Flo for inspiring me to make this and for teaching me all the techniques needed! I think it turned out perfectly!
Thanks for reading!
