Safeway employees across several Colorado locations, including Estes Park, Fountain, Pueblo, and Denver, have gone on strike following seven months of unsuccessful contract negotiations with Safeway and its parent company, Albertsons.
The strike, initiated by the United Food and Commercial Workers International Union Local 7, cites unfair labour practices such as bad faith bargaining, surveillance, and threats against workers. Safeway denies these claims, stating they are negotiating in good faith and aim for a fair agreement. Meanwhile, voting is ongoing at other Safeway stores in Colorado to decide on joining the strike.
This labour action coincides with ongoing contract disputes and recent strikes involving King Soopers workers and Kroger, signalling broader unrest in the grocery sector.
