Heavy Rains, Flash Flooding was Here
We had super heavy rain last night due to the effects of a hurricane. It was a bit scary because of the loud thunder and rain pouring down like cats and dogs. My dog was also scared and hid behind my husband. Usually, in this area, the rain stops quickly after a heavy downpour, especially in summer. However, it lasted for several hours last night. According to a report, it rained about 10 cm in 5 hours. Wow, that was a lot.
People started posting local flooding videos around midnight. That scared me because I knew exactly where it was. It was near my house, just a couple of minutes away by car. My house is on higher ground than the river, so I don't have as much risk as the houses next to the river. I was worried about the farm animals near the river.
I saw a TV crew the next day after coming back from the store. They were filming the local aftermath of last night's heavy rains and flooding. The news images scared me more than the local people's videos.
Near my driveway, the rain often washes away my gravel, which drives me nuts. We frequently fix the damaged parts. This time, when we noticed that the rain would damage our driveway a lot, my husband made some temporary drain holes in the driveway to prevent too much damage. It worked, but we noticed that the main road was slightly damaged by the heavy rain. The creek looked like a waterfall this morning.
The rain carved out a lot of the ditch next to the road. As you can see, the red clay-like mud moved significantly because of the rainwater.
This part looked heavily damaged. We just finished construction last summer, adding new dirt and gravel next to the main road near my driveway. Hmm...they will need to redo the construction again someday soon.
Actually, my husband made a phone call to the government office last evening to report the situation. They laughed at his report and told him that he was the 151st caller. We couldn't laugh about it because we felt this was quite serious rain damage. I am sure the person who laughed stopped laughing after watching the news.
The river looked almost full and was overflowing last night. It seemed okay this morning after the heavy rain. The weather was very humid and hot, just like it usually is after a hurricane passes through this area. I could never imagine living next to or near the river because I would constantly fear the rain.
There was a sign on the road that said, "Expect Flood Conditions." This area was covered by water last night.
I saw woods washed away by the rain. I am always amazed by the power of water. On my property, I don't want to cut trees unless there is a risk of them damaging my house if they fall. I want the tree roots to maintain the land's strength. I don't want to cut grass and plants either. I don't think I will change my driveway from gravel to asphalt because water will flow even faster in summer or freeze quickly in winter. Nature is sometimes dangerous but often strong, and we need trees and grass to protect the land. Anyway, I hope everyone is safe from the unpredictable summer weather.

大雨、洪水でした
昨晩はものすごい大雨で洪水になりました。雷もひどく、土砂降りで少し怖く感じました。私の犬も怖がって主人の後ろに隠れていました。たいてい、この地域では夏に雨が降っても割とすぐにやむことが多いです。ところが、昨日の雨はやむどころか降り続け、なんと５時間で１０センチメートルも降ったそうです。
地元の人たちが夜中近くに洪水のビデオを投稿していました。どの辺りのビデオかすぐにわかるほど近い場所だったので、恐ろしかったです。家から車で数分の場所にあるため緊迫感がありました。家は川から離れているためリスクは低いですが、川の近くの家や農家の動物たちが心配でした。
今朝、店から戻ってくるとき、テレビ報道のクルーを見かけました。この地域の大雨と洪水の被害をレポートしていたようです。ニュースの画像は、地元の人が撮影したビデオを見るよりも恐ろしさが増すような気がします。
私道の部分の砂利は大雨が降ると頻繁に流されてしまうのが困りモノです。大雨の翌日はダメージ部分を手入れしなければなりません。今回は、大雨の具合がいつもよりも激しかったので、主人があらかじめ私道部分に穴をあけて雨の逃げ道を作っておきました。功を奏していつもよりもダメージが少なく済んだようです。小川になっている部分から滝のように水が流れていました。
雨が公道の脇の溝をえぐって形が変わっていました。ご覧のとおり、赤土の粘土状に見える泥の部分が雨に流されていました。
ここはかなりダメージがあるようです。去年の夏、私道のすぐ横の公道部分に新しい土と砂利を足して工事を終えたばかりだというのに…。うーん、またすぐに自治体がやり直さなければならないのではないでしょうか。
主人が昨晩のうちに道の被害状況について電話で通報しました。係の人は笑いながら家で１５１件目の通報だと言っていました。私たちは深刻な被害になるのではないかと思っていたので、笑えませんでした。おそらく係の人もその後のニュース報道を見て笑いが消えたのではないでしょうか。
川は昨日の雨で今にも溢れ出しそうです。今朝の様子は落ち着いているようでした。今日はものすごく湿気が多くて暑く、まさに台風一過の天気です。私は川の隣や近くに住むのは雨のたびに不安になりそうなので避けたいです。
「洪水が予想されます」という看板が道に置かれています。この辺りは昨夜洪水になり水浸しでした。
木々が大雨に流され、道路脇にたまっていました。水の威力には驚かされます。私の敷地には、倒れてきて家に危害がありそうな場合を除いては、なるべく木を切らないようにしています。木の根っこが土地を安定させてくれると思っているからです。草や植物もなるべく切りたくありません。私道部分の土と砂利をアスファルトにも変えたくありません。夏は雨の速度を加速させてしまうでしょうし、冬は凍って滑るのが怖いからです。自然はときどき恐ろしいですが、土地を守るためには木々や草が必要だと思っています。夏の不安定な天候による危害がなるべくありませんように。
